Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 Launch - Business Insider

windows phone 8We followed along with the official live feed of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 launch as the company unveiled its new mobile platform.

The key features demonstrated were Rooms, Kids Corner, Data Sense, and SkyDrive integration.

Rooms is a way of group messaging and location sharing with a specific selection of people.

Kids Corner is perfect for parents whose children want to play with their phone and gives them a safe space to do so without access to your email or social networking.

Data Sense is a software feature that compresses web pages to lessen the impact on your data plan. In addition, it offers you a means to track your monthly data usage to help you avoid those nasty overage charges.

And Microsoft's SkyDrive is its cloud solution, making it a snap to access music, movies, and documents no matter which device you're using.

Here we go! Product boss Joe Belfiore is on stage.

He's excited that there are "actual lines of people outside our stores waiting to get our stuff."

Microsoft's app store has grown to 120,000 apps.

Microsoft wants to put "people at the center of the experience."

Lots of focus on the individual. "It's a phone made for?you."

"It's the perfect companion to your Windows PC and Xbox."

New social live tiles. Tapping on a person shows you his latest posts and tweets.

Windows Phone 8 will feature a new lock screen powered by "Live Apps."

It sounds like it'll be live widgets that change based on what you like. New Facebook photos, friends' tweets, and the like.

Belfiore mentions that he has over 700 photos on Facebook, and every time he takes out his phone, the Live App shows him a different one.

Time for a closer look at Skype. It's been integrated into Windows Phone 8.

Skype is always on, ready to receive a call or message all the time.

Belfiore predicts that 46 of the top 50 apps on other platforms will also be on Windows Phone.

Big buildup to a mystery app...

And it's Pandora for Windows Phone 8, available early 2013.

It'll include a year of free music without ads.

Here comes a feature called Data Sense, a way to keep an eye on your data plan and prevent overages.

Data Sense will compress web pages to make them use less data.

Data Sense will bring you "45% more web browsing" without going over your data plan.

Verizon will be first to offer Data Sense, but it's on its way to the rest of the providers.

Belfiore teasing a kid-friendly feature...windows phone 8

It's called "Kids Corner." A place for your kids to watch movies, run apps, and do whatever else you want to let them do without affecting the rest of your phone.

And here come some children to demonstrate it!

Belfiore's daughter just called him "mommy."

They're into it and they're quiet while playing Fruit Ninja.

Oh, hello! It's Jessica Alba.

"I don't have to worry about my kids getting into my social networks or emailing my partners."

Alba now plugging her new company?The Honest Company.

"We make household cleaning products, diapers, and wipes."

Alba exits and now we're back to talking about the personal features of the phone.

Introducing a new feature called Rooms, a way to connect with a specific group of people.

Use it to send messages and share locations.

Rooms will be cross-platform. Other phone users can get part of the Rooms experience.

Now we're talking about the phone, the PC, and the Xbox. The Microsoft ecosystem.

Skydrive, Microsoft's cloud solution, is built into Windows 8 and is readily available on Xbox.

"Think of your phone, tablet, and PC together as a virtual office."

Now we're talking about the camera.

Integrated sharing lets you blast out photos via Facebook, Twitter, email, or SkyDrive.

SkyDrive lets you instantly backup your photos to your computer.

SkyDrive starts you off with 7 GB for free. "The most free space out of anyone."

Moving on to music?your music collection will be available across devices.

The same is true with playlists?create one on your PC, it appears on your phone ia SkyDrive.

"No other phone works this nicely across your PC and home entertainment system."

Ballmer is in the building!

Seems to be taking a sharp dig at Apple: "When we set out to reinvent the smartphone, we didn't want to build a phone for all of us. We wanted to build a personal phone for each of us."

Ballmer is touting the unified Microsoft ecosystem as well?PC, tablet, phone, and Xbox.

Complimenting the Nokia 920 on its camera and wireless charging abilities.

Samsung's ATIV S has a huge screen and a long-lasting battery.

He seems pretty partial to HTC's Windows Phone 8 X. "It's remarkable."

Exclusive to Verizon will be the Samsung ATIV Oddyssey.

The 65 Microsoft Stores around the country will carry every single phone in every color option.

Ballmer mentioning that developers, hardware manufacturers, and service providers are "all in."

"Windows Phone is the best phone for Windows."

Jessica Alba and Joe Belfiore are back out on stage.

"You wouldn't mistake one of us for the other, but now you'd never mistake our phones for each other's phones."
