I'm in the market for a new computer; when will Windows 8 be out and is it worth getting? -- Stanley

Windows 8 is Microsoft's ambitious attempt to create a new operating system that would allow users to work the same on a PC as they would on a tablet or smartphone.

Windows 8 will use a tiled dashboard as its home screen (called Metro) that looks very much like the touch interface on current Windows Phone 7 smartphones.? These tiles are designed to allow those with touch screen interfaces to bypass the mouse to make a selection, thus making this new interface usable on tablets and special touch monitors as well as traditional PCs with a keyboard and mouse.

Underneath this dashboard is the traditional Desktop minus some old familiar items like the Start button, which is disorienting at first.

I'm predicting that a large number of users will scream "I want my old Windows back" when they first begin navigating this semi-familiar portion of the operating system, but over time, the new interface will allow you quicker access to information and programs that you want.

As of this writing, Windows 8 is still in a test version (currently called Release Preview) and should only be installed by IT pros and software developers that have a spare computer that can be sacrificed for testing purposes.

Test or 'beta' versions should never be installed on a computer that has any important data or on the only machine you own as you are almost guaranteed to have problems.

The first computer I upgraded with it, for example, was unable to connect to the Internet via wifi afterwards because the software (or driver) required for Windows 8 to make use of the wireless adapter didn't install properly.

Error messages, hardware that isn't recognized, and programs that don't function properly are a common result when installing test versions of any operating system, so it isn't something average users should ever consider doing.

Microsoft hasn't announced a release date as of yet, but the latest information we have suggests that computer manufacturers may start getting their 'Release To Manufacturing' version so they can start their build process in late July.

If the process follows previous releases, we might start seeing computers pre-installed with Windows 8 hit the market starting in October.

Even then, unless you are an 'early adopter' that doesn't mind dealing with being the first to discover a new problem, I'd suggest holding off on jumping into the Windows 8 pool.

Letting a few million hardcore techies play with the public release version before you take on the challenge will generally save you a lot of grief.? Lots of websites and YouTube videos (including ours) will publish all the do's and don'ts for migrating to Windows 8 if you give the tech community some time to compile the intelligence.

Microsoft always offers special upgrades for those buying a computer with an older operating system close to the launch of a new OS.? The Windows 8 upgrade will be available for those buying a new Windows 7 computer between June 2nd and Jan 31st, 2013 and allows an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 (via a download).

If you plan on upgrading an existing computer to Windows 8, you will definitely want to wait for a while after it's released as this scenario is traditionally the one that has the highest likelihood of issues.

Apple chief Tim Cook might have said that he doesn't like lawsuits, but he must have left a loophole open for International Trade Commission disputes. His company quietly filed a third challenge against HTC on June 4th (just now coming to light) that -- surprise -- claims HTC is still violating patents that it supposedly worked hard to avoid. If successful, Apple would slap down 29 devices that include a much more modern set of hardware than the first two disputes, including the One X (and EVO 4G LTE), One S and One V. Apple had success in December with the final results of its first ITC complaint and may simply be rolling the dice to try for more. Whatever throw Apple lands, there's no doubt that HTC and its fans are exasperated at the thought of more launch delays, or worse.

Twilio, the San Francisco-based startup that powers all kinds of phone-like applications on the web and mobile, just passed 100,000 developers on its platform. That's up from about 30,000 a year ago. "In six months, we've doubled our base," said chief executive Jeff Lawson. "It's been really exciting for us to see what others have built." Bigger companies like Airbnb have used Twilio to let guests and hosts confirm bookings through text messaging, while there are others that use it to power their call centers. Twilio is marking this with a project called Milestones. The company will randomly select three Twilio developers who post a two minute video of themselves talking about how the platform helped them reach their goals. Those developers will get free travel, hotel and tickets to the company's developer conference this year in mid-October.

BERLIN (AP) ? France's new foreign minister says he is confident Paris will bridge its differences with Berlin over how to resolve the eurozone debt crisis.

President Francois Hollande has challenged the German government's austerity-centered approach and called for a much greater focus on economic growth.

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said after meeting his German counterpart in Berlin Monday: "It is very important that we succeed in bringing together the points of view; I think that will be the case."

He said that "the French position isn't always understood" and dismissed notions that France is "reticent" toward budget discipline. But he insisted on the need for growth.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said "consolidation and impulses for growth are two sides of the same coin" ? both needed to create jobs and confidence.

CAIRO (AP) ? Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison Saturday for failing to stop the killing of protesters during the uprising that forced him from power last year. The ousted president and his sons were acquitted, however, of corruption charges in a mixed verdict that swiftly provoked a new wave of anger on Egypt's streets.

Revolutionary groups and the powerful Muslim Brotherhood have called for a massive protest at Tahrir Square, the heart of the uprising, at 5 p.m. local time.

After the sentencing, the 84-year old Mubarak suffered a "health crisis" while on a helicopter flight to a Cairo prison hospital, according to security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. One state media report said it was a heart attack, but that could not immediately be confirmed.

The officials said Mubarak cried in protest and resisted leaving the helicopter that took him to a prison hospital for the first time since he was detained in April 2011. Mubarak stayed at a regular hospital in his favorite Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh from his arrest until his trial began in on Aug. 3. The officials said he insisted on the helicopter that he be flown to the military hospital on the eastern outskirts of Cairo where he has stayed during the trial.

Mubarak finally left the chopper and moved to the Torah prison hospital more than two hours after his helicopter landed there.

Earlier, Mubarak sat stone-faced and frowning in the courtroom's metal defendants' cage while judge Ahmed Rifaat read out the conviction and sentence against him, showing no emotion with his eyes concealed by dark sunglasses. His sons Gamal and Alaa looked nervous but also did not react to either the conviction of their father or their own acquittals.

Mubarak was convicted of complicity in the killing of some 900 protesters during the 18-day uprising that forced him to resign in February 2011. He and his two sons were acquitted of corruption charges, along with a family friend who is on the run.

Rifaat opened the session with a strongly worded statement before handing down the verdicts. He expressed deep sympathy for the uprising.

"The people released a collective sigh of relief after a nightmare that did not, as is customary, last for a night, but for almost 30 black, black, black years ? darkness that resembled a winter night.

"The revolution by the people of Egypt was inspired by God. They did not seek a luxurious life or to sit atop the world, but asked their politicians, rulers and those in authority to give them a decent life and a bite to eat," he said. "They peacefully demanded democracy from rulers who held a tight grip on power."

One of the uprising's key pro-democracy groups, April 6, rejected the verdict, saying Rifaat at once paid homage to the protesters and ignored the grief of the families of those killed by acquitting the top police commanders.

"We will continue to cleanse Egypt from corruption," the group said.

"Justice was not served," said Ramadan Ahmed, whose son was killed on Jan. 28 last year. "This is a sham," he said outside the courthouse, a lecture hall in a police academy that once bore Mubarak's name.

U.S.-based Human Rights Watch called the verdict a "landmark conviction" but criticized the prosecution for failing to fully investigate the case.

"It sends a powerful message to Egypt's future leaders that they are not above the law," HRW said. "These convictions set an important precedent since just over a year ago, seeing Mubarak as a defendant in a criminal court would have been unthinkable," said Joe Stork, the group's spokesman.

Angered by the acquittals of the Mubarak sons and six top police officers, lawyers for the victims' families broke out chanting inside the courtroom as soon as Rifaat finished reading the verdict.

"The people want to cleanse the judiciary," they chanted. Some raised banners that read: "God's verdict is execution."

The charges related to killing protesters carried a possible death sentence that the judge chose not to impose, opting instead to send Mubarak to prison for the rest of his life.

Rifaat criticized the prosecution's case, saying it lacked concrete and material evidence and that there was nothing in what has been presented to the court that proved that the protesters were killed by the police. Because those who pulled the trigger have not been arrested, he added, he could not convict any of the top police officers of complicity in the killing of the protesters.

The prosecution had complained during the trial that it did not receive any help from the Interior Ministry in its preparation for the case and, in some cases, prosecutors were met with obstruction.

Outside the courtroom on the outskirts of the capital, there was jubilation initially when the conviction was announced, with one man falling to his knees and prostrating himself in prayer on the pavement and others dancing, pumping fists in the air and shooting off fireworks.

But that scene soon descended into tensions and scuffles, as thousands of riot police in helmets and shields held the restive, mostly anti-Mubarak crowd back behind a cordon protecting the court.

Later, thousands of protesters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of the uprising, and in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria on Egypt's northern coast. They chanted slogans denouncing the trial as "theatrical" and against the ruling generals who took over for Mubarak, led by his former defense minister. "Execute them, execute them!" chanted the protesters in Alexandria.

Mubarak and his former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly, who was in charge of the police and other security forces at the time of the uprising, were convicted of failing to act to stop the killings during the opening days of the revolt, when the bulk of protesters died. El-Adly also received a life sentence.

Most of the dead were either shot or run over by police vehicles in Cairo and a string of major cities across the country.

Mubarak and his sons ? one-time heir apparent Gamal and wealthy businessman Alaa ? were acquitted on corruption charges, with the judge citing a 10-year statute of limitations that had lapsed since the alleged crimes were committed.

Just days before the verdict was made public, the state prosecutor leveled new charges of insider trading against the two sons. It now appears that these charges may have been an attempt to head off new public outrage once the acquittals of the Mubarak sons were made public.

It has appeared all along that prosecutions since Mubarak's fall targeting relatively few high level officials and their cronies have been motivated largely by a desire to appease public anger expressed in massive street protests that continued long after Mubarak's ouster.

Scores of policemen charged with killing protesters have either been acquitted or received light sentences, angering relatives of the victims and the pro-democracy youth groups behind the uprising.

Rock-throwing and fist fights outside the courtroom left at least 20 people injured, and a police official said that four people were arrested.

Thousands of riot police and policemen riding horses had cordoned off the building to prevent protesters and relatives of those slain during the uprising from getting too close. Hundreds stood outside, waving Egyptian flags and chanting slogans demanding "retribution." Some spread Mubarak's picture on the asphalt and walked over it.

Mubarak's verdict came just days after presidential elections have been boiled down to a June 16-17 contest between Mubarak's last prime minister, one-time protege Ahmed Shafiq, and Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, a fundamentalist Islamist group that Mubarak persecuted for most of his years in power.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Shafiq said he could not comment on court rulings, but added that the Mubarak trial has shown that no one was above the law in today's Egypt and that no one could recreate the old regime.

The acquittal of the six police officers, he added, did not mean that he approved of their "tactics."

In contrast, a spokesman for Morsi said the verdicts were "shocking" and vowed retribution.

"The blood of our martyrs will not go in vain. We will work as Egyptians for the sake of a just retribution and the retrial of those who committed crimes against this nation," said the spokesman, Ahmed Abdel-Atti.

Morsi and Shafiq will go on a head-to-head presidential runoff on June 16-17.

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? Before his arrest on child molestation charges seven months ago, Jerry Sandusky was widely considered a living Penn State sports legend and the founder of an exemplary organization that worked with at-risk children.

Then came allegations, spelled out in a pair of grand jury reports, that a monster was concealed beneath a veneer of respectability and charitable leadership, a man who would systematically target and groom boys to feed predatory sexual desires.

Despite Sandusky's repeated delay requests, it now appears the case will get under way Tuesday with the selection of jurors from among his neighbors in the central Pennsylvania county that is home to Penn State, an area that before November could be called Happy Valley without a hint of irony or bitterness.

The scandal toppled football coach Joe Paterno, forced major changes at the highest levels of Pennsylvania's largest and most prominent university, and raised still-unanswered questions about the response by various people to the warning signs that had periodically arisen over more than a decade.

After months of planning, court officials say they are prepared for what could be several weeks of trial, building on experiences in other states with high-profile proceedings. About 250 reporters have registered to attend, and 29 television trucks are expected in tiny Bellefonte.

"I think we're ready to go. A few loose ends between now and Monday night, maybe even Tuesday morning, but we're pretty confident we're ready," said Jim Koval, spokesman for the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts.

The Nittany Lions' former defensive coordinator has consistently maintained his innocence, so jurors will have to sort out which of the two dramatically opposed versions of Jerry Sandusky is the truth: the avuncular ex-coach devoting his life to help needy children or the predator who used his access to boys to commit vile and criminal sexual attacks?

He was arrested twice, the first time in early November, when prosecutors charged him with abusing eight boys, including two whose identities had not ? and still have not ? been determined by investigators, boys witnesses said were subjected to sexual acts by Sandusky inside football team showers.

The second arrest came about a month later, when state prosecutors added charges related to two more boys. Sandusky's lawyers are still seeking to have all or some of the 52 counts against him dismissed on various grounds, more than enough counts to send the 68-year-old defendant to prison for the rest of his life.

The case has followed a twisted path to trial, starting with the decision by all the judges in Centre County to recuse themselves, so the state Supreme Court brought Judge John Cleland, a veteran jurist from northwestern Pennsylvania, to preside.

More recently his lawyers sought several times to delay the trial, but a state appeals court turned them down after Cleland ruled against them and kept the case on track to begin this week. Defense attorneys have appealed that ruling to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which could rule sometime Monday.

On Friday, a group of news organizations that includes the AP sought clarity on what types of electronic transmissions will be permitted from the courtroom during trial.

Sandusky's wife, Dottie, has stood by him, posting his bail and issuing a statement in early December that said the accusers had concocted lies that left her "shocked and dismayed." Sandusky appeared on NBC to deny he was a pedophile and ramble on when asked if he was sexually attracted to boys.

He later revisited the topic, telling The New York Times the question took him aback.

"I was sitting there saying, 'What in the world is this question?' You know, if I say, no, I'm not attracted to boys, that's not the truth, because I'm attracted to young people, boys, girls ..." he said.

Sandusky hasn't given any more interviews, and Cleland later issued a gag order that has effectively stopped his lawyers and prosecutors from talking about the case. But their prior statements and court filings suggest the trial will hinge on testimony by the accusers, and Sandusky's lawyers are determined to attack their credibility.

Recently, a defense filing referred to Victims 11 through 17, suggesting investigators might have identified seven additional accusers for whom Sandusky has not been charged. Whether those people exist, and if they will testify ? or if Sandusky will take the stand ? are among the questions the trial should answer.

Lawyers for five of the young men have asked Cleland to take steps to protect their anonymity, but the judge has yet to rule. The Associated Press doesn't identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted without their consent.

Their testimony will be all the more critical to prosecutors, because unlike sexual abuse cases, the Sandusky investigation likely did not produce forensic evidence. But the scope and nature of the prosecution's evidence, and its witness list, haven't been disclosed.

One closely watched witness will be Mike McQueary, an assistant coach who was a graduate assistant in 2001 when he said he saw Sandusky naked in the team showers with a boy of about 10 described in the grand jury report as Victim 2. McQueary didn't confront Sandusky but reported the incident to Paterno, who contacted Tim Curley, the athletic director.

Paterno, who was removed as coach the week after Sandusky's arrest, died in January of lung cancer. Curley was later charged, along with university vice president Gary Schultz, with failure to properly report suspected abuse and lying to the investigative grand jury. Both men deny the allegations and await trial.

The trial will focus on the specific criminal charges against Sandusky, so a more complete set of facts may have to wait until the Curley and Schultz case goes to trial, Penn State and others who are investigating release their findings and any civil litigation is resolved. That process could take years to play out.

That's the outlook from several groups who produce seasonal forecasts for the Atlantic hurricane season, which began Friday.

Here's a sampler:

? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration anticipates a 70 percent chance that from nine to 15 storms will reach tropical-storm status and earn names. Between four and eight will become hurricanes. Of those, from one to three are expected to become major hurricanes, where maximum sustained winds top 111 miles an hour.

? At Colorado State University, where atmospheric scientist William Gray pioneered seasonal tropical cyclone forecasts, he and colleague Philip Klotzbach anticipate 13 named storms, five hurricanes, and two major hurricanes.

? Researchers at Florida State University give the season a 70 percent chance of producing 10 to 16 named storms, and from five to nine hurricanes.

? Tropical Storm Risk.com, a consortium of scientists and insurance-industry specialists based in Britain, is anticipating (in round numbers) 13 tropical storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

The average between 1981 and 2010, the base period federal forecasters now use for determining above- or below-normal conditions, is 12 named storms a year, of which half reach hurricane status.

Several factors are contributing to the near-normal outlook. Among them, sea-surface temperatures in regions where the Atlantic's tropical cyclones form, and conditions in the tropical Pacific that have an extended influence over weather patterns elsewhere.

Tropical cyclones form over and feed off of warm surface waters. And while still warm by snow-bird standards, waters across the tropical Atlantic from Africa to Central America have posted their third-coolest May readings since 1995, when the current, relatively intense long-term period of tropical-cyclone activity began, notes Jeff Masters, a meteorologist and co-founder of the website Weather Underground. Sea surface temperatures are running only about a half a degree Fahrenheit above normal, suggesting that it may take longer for waters to warm enough to fuel tropical cyclones.

But he also points to a broad patch of unusually warm water running up the East Coast from Virginia through southern New England. There, average surface temperatures are running up to 7 degrees or more Fahrenheit above normal ? perhaps setting the stage for sustaining or intensifying the strength of any hurricane that travels up the eastern seaboard.

Publisher?s Note: This Portland Family column, written by Rob Ingram, was first published in June of 2009. In the spirit of his recent passing, and because Rob?s children will be without him this Father?s Day, we thought we would share it again, to maybe bring a smile to their faces.

Fatherhood: a wonderfully painful awakening into yourself that includes most of the positives and all of the negatives that make you.

I was talking with someone just yesterday about how when we were children and teenagers, we looked at the foolish things we did and just brushed it off; chalked it up to growing up, and considered it fun. But now, as fathers (I will not attempt to speak for mothers, as their plight is much different than ours) we inevitably freak out at every mistake and questionable decision our children make. Why? Simply because their mistakes show us ours. My daughter once got all As on her report card, except in P.E. I immediately internalized that as my failure because (while this is somewhat stereotypical) dads are supposed to teach those skills, at least in my life. Not that my wife doesn?t play catch, or provide quality bike-riding lessons, but that is my realm.

Years later my son would suffer from his first broken heart, and again I blamed myself! I thought if I had just taught him how to find someone who would never hurt him, or showed him how to avoid any deep emotional connections, he would not have to experience this. Sure!

In both situations, I stepped back and reflected, and realized that it is all part of life. As a dad, I will have to watch my children deal with many of the same challenges, difficulties and painful experiences that I have had. For me, I embrace those affairs for what they are and what they?ve taught me. But, as a father, I struggle with allowing my children to stumble where I fell! I don?t want them to know boo-boos, although I often laugh at the scars scattered all over my physique. I am especially afraid of the emotional scars, even though each wound to the heart I?ve absorbed has prepared me for the reality of today, and I appreciate them passionately! Without them, I dare say I would be ill-equipped for the whole of reality in this world; its cruelties, injustices and dispositions.

I?ve drawn on ideas from the Masters in Open & Distance Education (MAODE) that I have been studying with The OU since February 2010. Also ?The Digital Scholar? by Martin Weller and ?Preparing for blended e-learning? by Chris Pegler.

I come to the conclusion that learning, or rather teaching as a form of education is moving towards greater fluidity and liveliness in the relationship between the academic (author/lecturer) and the student.

The model education should look to is one developed in business, something I stumble upon studying OU MBA Module ?Creativity, Innovation & Change?

Drawing on a business model, the development of a more organic structure that is less hierarchical, as envisaged by Henry Mintzberg (1994), seems appropriate; it complements what authors such as John Seely Brown say about ?learning from the periphery? too. Mintzberg talks of an adhocracy, doodle here when I was making hand-drawn mind-maps during revision for an end of module exam (EMA).

Adhocracy

Characteristics of an adhocracy (Waterman, 1990; Mintzberg, 1994; Travica, 1999):

highly organic structure
little formalization of behavior
job specialization based on formal training
a tendency to group the specialists in functional units for housekeeping purposes but to deploy them in small, market-based project teams to do their work
a reliance on liaison devices to encourage mutual adjustment within and between these teams
low standardization of procedures
roles not clearly defined
?selective decentralization
?work organization rests on specialized teams
power-shifts to specialized teams
horizontal job specialization
high cost of communication (dramatically reduced in the networked age)
culture based on non-bureaucratic work

One could also draw on a simpler organic structure developed, again in the MBA arena, by Charles Handy.

Handy?s Shamrock (1989)

The advantage of a flexible organisation is that it can react quickly to a change in its external environment.

Since the 1990s, firms have examined their value chain and tried to reduce their workforce to a multi-skilled core, which is concerned with the creation or delivery of a product or service. All other supporting, non-central functions are outsourced wherever possible to the periphery.

Charles Handy suggested, however, that organisations do not consist of just the Core and the Periphery, since the periphery can be subdivided.

He calls this a shamrock organisation:

The first leaf of the shamrock represents the multi-skilled core of professional technicians and managers, essential to the continuity of the business
The second leaf Handy calls the contractual fringe, because non central activities are contracted out to firms specialising in activities such as marketing, computing, communications and research
The third leaf consists of a flexible workforce made up of part-time, temporary and seasonal workers.

However, the model I constantly turn to is the Activity System of Engestrom (via Vygotsky).

which also has its organic expression, not dissimilar to the Mintzberg concentric organisational plan and John Seely Brown?s ideas of learning from the periphery:

In the spirit of digital scholarship I?ve been experimenting with using Twitter to share thoughts on more than one book as I read them, highlighting a point and adding a Tweet. The feedback has been interesting, as has been the influx of new Twitter followers, invariable all with an academic or commercial interest in e-learning.

So come and join the feed, though from time to time you will receive tips on swim teaching best practice (how to fix a screw kick in breaststroke and some such) or as likely thoughts on life in the trenches as a machine gunner as we approach the centenary of the First World War.

I?d like to see this offered as an APP or Tool so that digital assets (stuff) or ?E-tivities? (Salmon, 2002) are automatically aggregated as a fluid, initial offer. In other words, assets are seen as a way of catalysing a process of exploration.
