Are your beliefs helping or hurting your personal development?

Confidence comes from internal and external. Our own personal confidence varies based on what we are doing.

Example: I'm pretty sure that every one reading this has 100% confidence in their ability to tie their shoes.

In that example, you first had to learn how to be competent which gave you the confidence in the area of tying your shoes.

I'm going to break this down a bit. There are 4 levels of competence.

1. unconscious incompetence- This is you don't know you should know a skill and don't know how to do it.
2. conscious incompetence- This is you do know you should know a skill and don't know how to do it.
3. conscious competence- This is you do know you should know a skill and you know how to do it.
4. unconscious competence- This is where you've become so competent that it is just auto pilot.

Babies go through this same process learning how to walk.

-First, they don't know they they should walk and don't have the ability to walk.

-Second, from seeing adults (authority figures) they realize that they should walk, don't have the ability to walk, but start making efforts to walk.

-Third, they learn from their successes and failures. They somewhat have the ability to walk, but sometimes it's shaky.

-Finally, they've learned to walk and it's been repeated so much that now it's an automatic response not requiring thought.

Trying new things and sticking with them repeatedly is a great way to build confidence. It's part of the reason that adults put kids in gymnastics or martial arts. In both of these subjects, the true objective behind the art form is to learn to master your body.

If there is any area that you want to have confidence in, just go at it like a baby does. A baby doesn't try to walk 5 times then gives up forever saying that it will never be able to walk. A baby keeps at it until it gets to unconscious competence.

This works for becoming outgoing, becoming better with women, learning a language, flying a plane and anything else you can think of.

The reason that this is awesome for building self confidence is because each individual success in areas that you attempt to become competent in, magnifies itself with the other things that you are confident in.

Example. If you know how to drive a car, the confidence that you have would transfer over to say driving a fork lift or a moving van. Obviously there may be a few things to learn, but the commonalities between the similar tasks allow that transfer of competence.

All of these come together to help build your self confidence. If you master your body and your mind, you will have the self confidence that you will be well equipped to take on a new task, learn it and be competent in it. This has an exponential effect of your general well being.

For mastering your mind, I recommend meditaion, yoga and HBR.
