Mourners arrive at a cremation ground to attend the funeral of a rape victim after her body arrived from Singapore, in New Delhi on Sunday.
By Reuters
NEW DELHI - The body of a woman whose gang rape provoked protests and rare national debate about violence against women in India arrived back in New Delhi early on Sunday and was quickly cremated at a private ceremony.?
The unidentified 23-year-old medical student died from her injuries on Saturday, prompting promises of action from a government that has struggled to respond to public outrage.?
She had suffered brain injuries and massive internal injuries in the attack on Dec. 16, and died in hospital in Singapore where she had been taken for treatment.?
She and a male friend had been returning home from a movie theater, media reports say, when six men on a bus beat them with metal rods and repeatedly raped the woman. The friend survived.?
India charges six suspects with murder after victim of horrific gang rape dies
Six suspects were charged with murder after her death.?
A Reuters correspondent saw family members who had been with her in Singapore take her body from the airport to their Delhi home in an ambulance with a police escort.?
Ruling party leader Sonia Gandhi was seen arriving at the airport when the plane landed and Prime Minister Mannmohan Singh's convoy was also there, the witness said.?
A 23-year-old medical student who was raped and attacked on a city bus in New Delhi has died, resulting in charges against six men. Even before she died, her savage attack triggered mass protests about treatment of women. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.
The body was then taken to a crematorium and cremated. Media were kept away but a Reuters witness saw the woman's family and government officials, including junior home minister, R.P.N. Singh, coming out of the crematorium.?
Security in the capital remained tight after authorities, worried about the reaction to the news of her death, had on Saturday deployed thousands of policemen and closed some roads and metro stations.
Protesters still gathered, in New Delhi and other cities, to keep the pressure on Singh's government to get tougher on crime against women. Last weekend, protesters fought pitched battles with police.?
On Sunday, lines of policemen in riot gear and armed with heavy wooden sticks stood in front of metal barricades closing off roads in New Delhi. Morning traffic was light.?
Government caught off-guard
The outcry over the attack caught the government off-guard. It took a week for Singh to make a statement, infuriating many protesters.?
Issues such as rape, dowry-related deaths and female infanticide rarely enter mainstream political discourse in India.?
The 23-year-old who was gang-raped in New Delhi and thrown from a bus has died from her injuries in Singapore, where she was being treated. NBC's Natalie Morales reports.
Analysts say the death of the woman dubbed "Amanat," an Urdu word meaning "treasure," by some Indian media could change that, although it is too early to say whether the protesters calling for government action to better safeguard women can sustain their momentum through to national elections due in 2014.?
India gang-rape victim dies in hospital; case focused attention on sexual violence
Newspapers raised doubts about the commitment of both male politicians and the police to protecting women.?
"Would the Indian political system and class have been so indifferent to the problem of sexual violence if half or even one-third of all legislators were women?" the Hindu newspaper asked.?
The Indian Express acknowledged the police force was understaffed and poorly paid, but there was more to it than that.?
"It is geared towards dominating citizens rather than working for them, not to mention being open to influential interests," the newspaper said. "It reflects the misogyny around us, rather than actively fighting for the rights of citizens who happen to be female."?
PhotoBlog: Police try to temper outrage over gang rape
Most sex crimes in India go unreported, many offenders go unpunished, and the wheels of justice turn slowly, according to social activists, who say that successive governments have done little to ensure the safety of women.?
Commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social issues.?
New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in India rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.?

Highlights from recent visit with the troops in Norfolk: We had a great time with them, actually. We got to hang out and play dodge ball with some of the groups. We got to walk around the USS Boise (SSN 764) submarine, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) aircraft carrier and the USS Porter (DDG 78). It?s amazing to meet all of these Sailors ? to see how young and enthusiastic they are, how much they love serving their country and how much they love their job. They take great passion and pride in serving their country. It?s really great to see.
Who Sheamus looked up to as a kid growing up: : I was really a big fan of WWE as a kid. I used to love watching ?Mr. Perfect? (Curt Hennig), ?The Million Dollar Man? Ted DiBiase, ?Macho Man? Randy Savage and Bret Hart. I?ve always been a fan of numerous Superstars and have taken inspiration from different guys in different ways, but those are really the four I loved watching as a kid.
Relationship with William Regal: One of the first guys to really text me or call me up was William Regal. He offered to help me and have me travel with him. We have the same sense of humor, same pop culture background. We got on right away from the start. He?s been a great help to me by watching my matches and critiquing them. There have been others like Triple H ? Arn Anderson as well. I?m always motivated to pick the brain of people who have been so successful. Great number of minds and talents in WWE and they?re all at your disposal. It?s definitely helped me to progress faster than I would have on my own. ? It?s about drive ? never be happy with what you do. You can?t rest on your laurels because you?re only as good as your last match. There are a lot of hungry Superstars ready to come in here and want to knock you off your spot.
Future goals in wrestling: Foremost, I want to win the World Heavyweight Championship back from The Big Show. I will get that opportunity in Richmond at SmackDown TV. I would love to do a WrestleMania match with The Undertaker. I don?t know how many Mania matches he has left in him, but I would love to be the guy who breaks that streak.
Favorite ice cream: I am a big ice cream fan, so this will be hard one. Birthday cake ice cream is my favorite. The first time I came over to the states, I was 18 and had never heard of Ben & Jerry?s. I was training at the time and I remember looking at the ?Chunky Monkey? carton where it said ?Fat Content per Ice Cream Tub = 16 grams.? I thought, ?Hey, there?s only 16 g of fat in this tub!? So, after a few weeks of eating Ben & Jerry?s, I realized it was 16 g of fat per serving. There were about six servings in one tub and I was eating 100 grams of fat every couple of days. I was wondering why I wasn?t losing any weight!

Extinct whale found? Well, sort of. Scientists have traced the lineage of the pygmy right whale back to an ancient family of whales called cetotheres, who were thought to be extinct.
By Tia Ghose,?LiveScience.com / December 19, 2012

The findings, published Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, may help to explain why the enigmatic marine mammals look so different from any other living whale.
"The living pygmy right whale is, if you like, a remnant, almost like a living fossil," said Felix Marx, a paleontologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. "It's the last survivor of quite an ancient lineage that until now no one thought was around."
Living fossil
The relatively diminutive pygmy right whale, which grows to just 21 feet (6.5 meters) long, lives out in the open ocean. The elusive marine mammals inhabit the Southern Hemisphere and have only been spotted at sea a few dozen times. As a result, scientists know almost nothing about the species' habits or social structure.
The strange creature's arched, frownlike snout makes it look oddly different from other living whales. DNA analysis suggested pygmy right whales diverged from modern baleen whales such as the blue whale and the humpback whale between 17 million and 25 million years ago. However, the pygmy whales' snouts suggested they were more closely related to the family of whales that includes the bowhead whale. Yet there were no studies of fossils showing how the pygmy whale had evolved, Marx said. [In Photos: Tracking Humpback Whales]
To understand how the pygmy whale fit into the lineage of whales, Marx and his colleagues carefully analyzed the skull bones and other fossil fragments from pygmy right whales and several other ancient cetaceans.
The pygmy whale's skull most closely resembled that of an ancient family of whales called cetotheres that were thought to have gone extinct around 2 million years ago, the researchers found. Cetotheres emerged about 15 million years ago and once occupied oceans across the globe.
The findings help explain how pygmy whales evolved and may also help shed light on how these ancient "lost" whales lived. The new information is also a first step in reconstructing the ancient lineage all the way back to the point when all members of this group first diverged, he said.

Beijing - China?s government tightened Internet controls Friday with approval of a law that requires users to register their names after a flood of online complaints about official abuses rattled Communist Party leaders.
Authorities say the law will strengthen protections for personal information. But it also is likely to curtail the Internet?s status as a forum to complain about the government or publicize corruption.
?Their intention is very clear: It is to take back that bit of space for public opinion, that freedom of speech hundreds of millions of Chinese Internet users have strived for,? said Murong Xuecun, a prominent Chinese writer.
The rules approved by China?s national legislature highlight the chronic tension between the ruling Communist Party?s desire to reap technology?s benefits and its insistence on controlling information.
Beijing encourages Web use for business and education but tries to block material deemed subversive or obscene. It has steadily stepped up censorship, especially after social media played a role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.
The latest measure requires users to provide their real names and other identifying information when they register with access providers or post information publicly.
?This is needed for the healthy development of the Internet,? said Li Fei, deputy director of the legislature?s Legal Work Committee, at a news conference.
Li rejected complaints that the public will be deprived of a forum that has been used to expose misconduct.
?The country?s constitution protects citizens? rights in supervising and criticizing the state and government officials? behavior,? Li said.
The measure comes amid reports that Beijing might be disrupting use of software that allows Web surfers to see sites abroad that are blocked by its extensive filters.
At the same time, regulators have proposed rules that would bar foreign companies from distributing books, news, music and other material online in China.
The government has given no indication how it will deal with the technical challenge of registering the more than 500 million Chinese who use the Internet.
Microblog operators, two of which say they have more than 300 million users each, were ordered last year to confirm the identities of users but acknowledge they have yet to complete that task.
The main ruling party newspaper, People?s Daily, has called weeks for tighter Internet controls, saying rumors spread online have harmed the public.
The secretive ruling party is uneasy about the public?s eagerness to discuss politics and sensitive issues online despite threats of punishment.
In March, authorities scrambled to squelch online rumors about a possible coup amid a political crisis that led to the downfall of a prominent party figure, Bo Xilai, ahead of the party?s fall leadership transition. A dozen websites were closed and six people detained.
This week, 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers circulated an online petition this week appealing for free speech, independent courts and for the ruling party to encourage private enterprise.
Communist leaders who see the Internet as a promising source of economic growth were slow to enforce the same level of control they impose on movies, books and other media, apparently for fear of hurting e-commerce and other fledgling online businesses.
Until recently, Web surfers could post anonymous comments online or on microblogs.
That gave ordinary Chinese a unique opportunity to express themselves to a public audience in a society where newspapers, television and other media all are state-controlled. Some of the most popular microbloggers have millions of readers.
It also made the Internet a clearinghouse for accusations of official misconduct.
A local party official in China?s southwest was fired in November after scenes from a videotape of him having sex with a young woman spread quickly on websites.
Web surfers can circumvent filters by using virtual private networks ? encryption software that is used by companies for financial data and other sensitive information. But VPN users say disruptions began in 2011 and are increasing, suggesting regulators are trying to block encrypted traffic.

Top dog at RIM Thorsten Heins heavily implied that video chat would be added to BBM when BlackBerry 10 showed up, and now possible confirmation of the feature has come from what are thought to be leaked presentation slides. Originating on CrackBerry's forums, the images have been taken down on various sites, leading us to believe they're legit and that strongly worded requests have led to their removal. Not only do they suggest BBM video chat is coming to BB10, but also the ability to screen share during these video calls. Another slide details a new task manager for the OS called "BlackBerry Remember," which can sync with Outlook and -- based on its description and what was uncovered in the gold SDK -- may include Evernote integration. We've contacted RIM for comment and will update you with any response, but until then, take a look at the slide above and the pair hidden after the break to assess for yourself whether they're the real deal.

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Contributing geometric and topological analyses of micro-materials, University of Massachusetts Amherst mathematician Robert Kusner aided experimental physicists at the University of Colorado (UC) by successfully explaining the observed "beautiful and complex patterns revealed" in three-dimensional liquid crystal experiments. The work is expected to lead to creation of new materials that can be actively controlled.
Kusner is a geometer, an expert in the analysis of variational problems in low-dimensional geometry and topology, which concerns properties preserved under continuous deformation such as stretching and bending. His work over 3 decades has focused on the geometry and topology of curves, surfaces and other spaces that arise in nature, such as soap films, knots and the shapes of fluid droplets. Kusner agrees with physicist and lead author Ivan Smalyukh of UC Boulder that their collaboration is the first to show in experiments that some of the most fundamental topological theorems hold up in real materials. Their findings appear in the current early online issue of Nature.
UMass Amherst's Kusner explains, "There are two important aspects of this work. First, the experimental work by the Colorado team, who fabricated topologically complex micro-materials allowing controlled experiments of three-dimensional liquid crystals. Second, the theoretical work performed by us mathematicians and theoretical physicists while visiting the University of California Santa Barbara's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP). We provided the geometric and topological analysis of these experiments, to explain the observed patterns and predict what patterns should be seen when experimental conditions are changed."
Kusner was the lone mathematician among four organizers of last summer's workshop on "Knotted Fields" at KITP, which led to this work. The workshop engaged about a dozen other mathematicians and about twice as many theoretical and experimental physicists in a month-long investigation of the interplay between low-dimensional topology and what physicists call "soft matter."
In their experiments, the physicists at UC Boulder showed that tiny topological particles injected into a liquid crystal medium behave in a manner consistent with established theorems in geometry and topology, Kusner says. The researchers say they have thus identified approaches for building new materials using topology.
UC Boulder's Smalyukh and colleagues set up the experiment by first creating colloids, solutions in which tiny particles are dispersed but not dissolved in a host medium, such as milk, paint and shaving cream. Specifically, they injected tiny, different-shaped particles into a liquid crystal, which behaves something like a liquid and a solid. Once injected into a liquid crystal, the particles behaved as predicted by topology.
Smalyukh says, "Our study shows that interaction between particles and molecular alignment in liquid crystals follows the predictions of topological theorems, making it possible to use these theorems in designing new composite materials with unique properties that cannot be encountered in nature or synthesized by chemists. These findings lay the groundwork for new applications in experimental studies of low-dimensional topology, with important potential ramifications for many branches of science and technology."
For example, he adds, these topological liquid crystal colloids could be used to upgrade current liquid crystal displays like those used in laptops and television screens, to allow them to interact with light in new, more energy efficient ways.

If this really is your first time trying to buy an used car from an auto auction, you could be unsure regarding which type of used car auction you must choose. It?s best in the event that you first take the time to familiarize your self with both on the web auto auctions and live auto auctions, when it concerns making a choice.
As you probably already know just, online car or truck auctions are car auctions that take place over the internet. These auctions, themselves, are available in several different forms. For example, it is possible to purchase an used car from an on line auction internet site. In the last several years, the acceptance of on the web market sites has increased. That?s what has led many car owners to record their used cars on the market online. The only disadvantage to doing so is that you actually know nothing about the car owner. It can be difficult, if perhaps not entirely impossible, if they have even the on the market car in their possession to tell. Also, online auction internet sites let car owners from throughout the country sell vehicles online. It can make the distribution expensive, while this does give a greater selection to you of vehicles to select from.
Another kind of online auto auction that you need to be able to find online is auto deals that are controlled by old-fashioned auction houses or organizations. As a result of reputation of the internet, a significant number of auction owners are rethinking the way which they conduct business. Many are now starting to change their live auctions with on line auctions and many are also deciding to accomplish both. When an house or company chooses with an on the web used car auction, they often achieve this right on their very own webpage. What is good about taking part in this type of auction is that you ought to manage to locate a local auction company. This would make the supply of the vehicle in question easier and it could give the opportunity to you to prevent by and examine or inspect the vehicle that you?d want to consider bidding on.
While on the web auto auctions do sound appealing, mostly because of their benefit, there?s nothing can beat attending an actual, live auto market. In reality, it is often suggested that those who desire to get a car from an used car auction attend a live one. Live vehicle auctions are good as you are in a position to choose which auctions you would like to attend. This means that if you are now living in a particular area, like the Chicago area, you may elect to attend a local car auction, as opposed to one that?s located too much away. You also have the option of choosing to attend a totally free used car auction or one which requires the payment of an entrance fee; your choice is yours to create.
Probably, the greatest good thing about buying an used car from a live used car market is the proven fact that you?re able to see the car yourself. Actually, it is possible to often do significantly more than just start to see the car. Several car auction houses or businesses have planned examination periods. These sessions are where you are able to check each car that you could be interested in buying, inside and out.
Of course, your choice as to whether you?d prefer to buy a car from an used car auction or an online used car auction is yours to produce, but you should know that many car owners report achievement when buying from a live car auction. For starters, you may want to check out the live car auctions published by North Shore Auto Auction. Should you maybe not find what you are looking for, you may then continue to examine your other options; choices that may include online car or truck auctions.

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - A former aide to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker was sentenced to two years in prison on Friday for embezzling tens of thousands of dollar from a fund for families of U.S. soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The aide, Kevin Kavanaugh, was also sentenced to two years of extended supervision and ordered to pay back the $51,200 he embezzled from Operation Freedom, a military appreciation event held each year at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
Kavanaugh, who was convicted by a jury in October, worked for Walker when the first-term Republican governor served as Milwaukee County executive.
Kavanaugh, 62, was the treasurer of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a charity involved in Operation Freedom, from 2006 to 2009. Walker appointed him to serve on the Milwaukee County Veteran Service Commission during Walker's term as county executive.
Walker originally ran the Operation Freedom event through his county office. It was later turned over to the Purple Heart organization after Walker received legal advice the event should be handled by a charitable organization.
Tim Russell, another Walker aide, was implicated in the same investigation and pleaded guilty in November to diverting more than $21,000 to his personal bank account.
The investigation is part of a wider probe into Walker's county executive office.
Kelly Rindfleisch, who was Walker's deputy chief of staff, pleaded guilty to felony misconduct in public office in October and was sentenced to six months in jail after admitting to campaigning for Republicans while working in Walker's office for Milwaukee County.
Darlene Wink, a former executive assistant in the county executive's office, pleaded guilty to charges of political solicitation by public officials this year. She is expected to be sentenced in January.
Walker, who was county executive from 2002 to 2010, has not been charged in the investigation.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't taking any chances with their franchise quarterback's sprained right shoulder and dislocated rib.
Though the Steelers confirmed Ben Roethlisberger will return to the starting lineup on Sunday against San Diego after missing three weeks due to injury, Roethlisberger will take the field with a little extra protection.
Roethlisberger will play with a custom-fit rib/chest compression shirt and a layer of Kevlar-lined composite in his shoulder pads to help absorb hits to his clavicle and shoulder joint regions.
The padding, made by Unequal Technologies, has grown popular across the NFL. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick wore a similar compression shirt after injuring his ribs a few years ago and dozens of players ? including Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu and linebacker James Harrison ? use Unequal CRT in their helmets.
The padding ? about a half-inch thick? in Roethlisberger's shoulder pads is similar to the gear the company puts in its chest protectors for baseball catchers. Roethlisberger said last week his shoulder pads had been "juiced up" by the team trainers.
Whatever he's wearing, the Steelers (7-5) are eager to have him back on the field. Roethlisberger took "90 percent" of the first-team snaps on Thursday without any major issues.
"He looks like himself for the most part," offensive coordinator Todd Haley said. "Now I don't know what he's feeling when he's doing some of those things. But it looks like he's moving around pretty good."
Roethlisberger said he felt "good" but declined to expand. Haley doesn't expect there to be any limitations to the playbook though he joked he might not call as many designed run plays for his quarterback, who never met a play he didn't like to extend.
"I think he understands his body better than anybody," Haley said. "He's the one that's got to make the decisions and we'll just try to put him in the best positions to succeed."
The Steelers went 1-2 in Roethlisberger's absence, including a 23-20 victory over Baltimore last week behind backup Charlie Batch. While Batch's steady performance against the Ravens kept Pittsburgh's playoff hopes alive, the team hopes to hit its stride with a healthy Roethlisberger under center.
"When Ben's in it's just a whole different level of game planning and things that teams have to do just to compensate for how athletic he is," wide receiver Mike Wallace said. "I think he brings a dimension to the team that nobody else can bring."

ATLANTA (Reuters) - A carbon monoxide leak that sent nearly 50 Atlanta elementary school students and teachers to hospitals was caused by human error when maintenance workers left a boiler valve open, officials said on Thursday.
Authorities evacuated the Finch Elementary School on Monday after firefighters detected what they described as the highest levels of carbon monoxide they had ever seen.
Students and teachers complained of headaches and nausea and 47 people were transported to nearby hospitals where they were all treated and released, Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Stephen Alford said.
Days before the leak, maintenance employees were working on equipment that shared some components with the school's boiler, Alford said.
"They left a valve open," he said.
The open valve was discovered during an investigation of the leak but the maintenance workers did not come forward with the information, Alford said.
"That was a problem," he said. "With everything that happened on Monday, we would have wanted them to come forward and at least help us identify what the issue may be."
He declined to comment on whether any disciplinary action would be taken against the maintenance workers, saying the investigation is ongoing.
A temporary boiler has been installed and officials hope to reopen the school on Friday.
They have also installed carbon monoxide detectors, Alford said.
"We're going to do that for all of our schools," Alford said, even though Georgia law does not require schools to have detectors.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives introduced legislation on Wednesday aimed at bolstering federal oversight of compounded drugs like the tainted steroid injections blamed for a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak.
But the legislation is not likely to move forward in the Republican-controlled chamber. In fact, aides from both parties said neither the House nor the Democratic-led Senate is expected to vote on meningitis legislation this year, given the little time remaining and the overarching focus on so-called "fiscal cliff" deficit-reduction talks.
Some Democratic lawmakers have warned that enacting tighter federal standards for compounded drugs could become more difficult in the new year, as the meningitis outbreak wanes and loses public attention.
The outbreak, linked to steroid injections from the Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center, has sickened 541 people, 36 of whom have died, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The public health disaster has also spawned several investigations including a U.S. grand jury probe.
Drug compounding is a traditional pharmacy practice in which pharmacists alter or recombine drugs to meet the special needs of individual patients with a physician's prescription. The practice is regulated mainly by state pharmacy boards that do not impose the stringent safety and efficacy standards that the Food and Drug Administration requires of drug manufacturers.
But in the past few decades, some compounding pharmacies, such as NECC, have become large operations selling thousands of drug doses to clinics, hospitals and other healthcare providers across state lines.
Critics say those operations rival drug manufacturers in scale and should be subjected to strict FDA standards. But past attempts to strengthen federal regulation has been defeated by industry lobbying and legal maneuvering.
FDA has lately come under fire in Congress, mainly from Republican lawmakers who say it has the authority to act against problem compounders but failed to take effective action against NECC despite problems dating back ten years.
Public Citizen, an advocacy group that tracks drug safety issues, has called for an investigation of FDA's failures and urged the agency to inspect other compounders where problems have also surfaced over the past several years.
The legislation introduced on Wednesday by Democratic representatives Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut and Nita Lowery of New York is the second House Democratic measure to emerge since the outbreak first surfaced in mid-September.
The bill, known as the SAFE Compounding Drugs Act, would require compounding companies to register with the FDA, allow the agency to set minimum production standards and impose new labeling restrictions on compounded drugs.
Representative Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, also introduced a measure to address FDA's authority last month.
The agency itself has called on Congress to allow it to set national standards for large drug compounding operations. FDA officials are scheduled to discuss a potential new regulatory structure during a meeting with state officials on December 19.
