Goodbye 401K, Goodbye IRA, Hello Argentina | Shenandoah

?

IF anyone within the sound of my voice, the view of my pages, or with even the most remote of memories about the past five years, today?s Rush Limbaugh show will provide a stunning flashback into what I was warning about in 2007 and 2008 along with the ?Talkmaster,? one Neal Boortz out of Atlanta via his syndicated radio program. More on the background later, first a brief video of the ?economist? who created a plan for a mandatory national retirement program, one Teresa Ghilarducci via YouTube from May 11, 2009:

?

?

Bad enough? Nah, she?s the lightweight and irrelevant one regarding this discussion. For a true understanding of the idea behind nationalizing everyone?s retirement account unless they are a member of a union pension program, a brief historical review of the circumstances which created the impetus for this proposal.

?

In late 2007 the evidence of an impending economic collapse was about the most obvious event on the horizon for everyone except the blind, ignorant, or willfully born with the stupid DNA as part of their genetic heritage. Beyond the obvious signals such as distress within the real estate industry unseen since the 1930?s and structural deterioration of the financial industry, politicians were observing a futile effort by the Federal Reserve to preserve asset prices in the face of a massive deflationary tsunami and those attempts were not only failing on a monthly basis, but by mid 2008, an almost hour by hour deterioration and collapse of various programs to stem the crisis de jour. Needless to say every effort ended up a complete failure culminating with a massive stock and commodity crash which wiped out trillions of dollars of America?s wealth.

?

During this crisis, the Democratic Party Caucus concocted an idea which involved the nationalization of 401K?s, IRA?s, and other retirement instruments. The idea was purely political to seize control of the assets to ?bail out? Social Security and provide a guaranteed return for all American citizens in their golden years, even if the retirement age is eventually extended to one hundred and two.? The initial program was concocted by a tax evading Congressman from New York, one Charles Rangel and the Botox Queen of California, Nancy Pelosi. The idea was to provide a guaranteed return of 3% plus the official Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index calculation for that year. The idea was to exploit the declining stock market and unpopularity of the Bush administration by offering a ?reset? which put everyone who voluntarily participated in the program (eventually to become mandatory) a pass by setting the valuation of the participant?s account back to the original value on the selected date (i.e., December 31, 2008).

?

The proposal was shelved however, once it became apparent just how impotent the G.O.P. was and the incompetence of their Presidential nominee during the summer and autumn time period of 2008 as the crisis accelerated. By saving this idea for a later time, the Democrats would simply accelerate and encourage the Republicans to continue on their path of self-immolation until ?their man? was President of the United States.

?

Fast forward to the past few days and articles which suddenly started to appear as the political elites banter about the ?fiscal cliff? and perceived crisis which would follow:

?

Does Government Want To Drain Americans? 401(k) Plan? - Investor?s Business Daily

?

The 401(k) Is a $240 Billion Waste ? The Atlantic

?

Fiscal Cliff: Why Congress Might Have to Mess with the 401(k) ? Time Magazine

?

And finally, Rush Limbaugh?s take during his ratio program from his website:

?

Details: The Plan to Steal Your 401(k)

?

The final story provides a little enlightenment as to why Professor Teresa Ghilarducci is now being used as cover for the proposal; if Pelosi?s or Rangel?s name were attached to such an idea it would immediately become radioactive and create a firestorm of opposition. The Democrats and Progressives have learned the methodology known as the ?Chicago Way? from the Obama regime and now understand that using their propaganda arm, the media, to soften the beaches for such a drastic proposal is a necessary evil for the dumbed-down masses.

?

Thus the socialized healthcare approach has begun with the ?oh the poor have no real retirement? and ?it is not fair that the wealthy have a good retirement and the middle class gets the crumbs,? and other such tripe. The initial softening is not enough to raise the ire of the population at this time and the drastic final curtain call must come down in my opinion to implement the nationalization of American citizen?s retirement accounts.

?

At this very moment, President Obama is grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat. By carefully manipulating the ignorant and cowardly Republican leadership into an agreement to raise the debt ceiling, he created the fiscal cliff opportunity just when it was needed after his re-election. The President can ignore the pleas of the GOP and hold steady to his demand for higher taxes on the wealthy only while refusing to cut any spending other than in the Defense Department. Thus odds are better than 75-25 that the GOP will hold firm, receive the blame for the nation going over the fiscal cliff of their own design and the resulting economic downturn.

?

Downturn?

?

Yes, as in massive recession.

?

Starting in January 2013, de facto capital controls will be in place (see If You Can Get out of the United States, I would suggest you GET OUT NOW), payroll and numerous other taxes will increase on wage earners, and the upper income brackets will endure a 44.8% effective tax rate which does not include state taxes, increases in the estate tax rate, and proposed fees to be imposed on investment vehicles still winding their way through the bureaucracy. After two months of pain from the increased witholding? from paychecks and a rapid decline in equity prices that I project will be? 18-34% from current levels the American public will freak out demanding action to save their retirement and stop the economic contraction.

?

This is the only opening that the Democrats will need to strong arm the Republicans into an absurd piece of legislation which will encompass everything from guarantees for union and government pension programs to expansion of Social Security benefits. In the end, no matter what is said or done, the Republicans will cave as they have done with Obamacare funding and fail to prevent their weak progressive arm of the party from following the Democratic leadership like lemmings off the cliff. The myth that the Obama legacy will be impacted needs a rapid refresher to the reader as can anyone reading this piece remember any actions Obama took in March of 2009? The majority of Americans do not and could care less as long as their retirements are made whole, their paychecks restored to healthier levels, and the price of? iThings is affordable or can be financed with Federal Reserve funny money.

?

Amazingly enough, unlike the reaction of the citizens of Argentina where they started bombing Citibank ATM?s in retaliation, most Americans will bleat like sheeple as long as their television schedule is unimpeded and their iPad WiFi connections are still free.

?

The question then becomes one of managing the trillions of dollars of investment instruments the government seizes and what rate of compensation those firms would receive.? To find out the most likely participants in such an arrangement, simply look up the Wall Street firms which donated to the Obama campaign and who just happen to be Primary Dealers for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The deal is too sweet for the Fed as their firms can now boost their balance sheets and launder more bad debt by simply labeling it as AAA paper and putting into the massive government retirement pools. After all, who within the U.S. Treasury would dare to question the viability of a $14 trillion account managed for the government by Wall Street?s best and brightest?

?

As far-fetched as this idea is, five years ago, socialized healthcare in America was considered laughable. If one takes a moment to review how nationalizing all of the retirement programs could cure several problems at once, it becomes a logical and potentially nightmarish scenario:

?

1. Cures the solvency issues of major financial institutions.

?

2. Provides the illusion of solvency for the Social Security program.

?

3. Gives American citizens the false perception that they will have a solvent and safe retirement vehicle with no taxation or management concerns as the government takes care of everything.

?

The unforeseen final benefit for those in power, especially those at the Federal Reserve and central banks around the world is that by seizing these assets, America will appear to be stable enough to take a leadership role in the establishment of an I.T.U. (International Trade Unit); also known as a single world currency.

?

Of course, once you have a single world currency for nations to participate in, a one world government to manage it must follow.

?

Soccer Goalkeeping Tips ? Recreation and Sports

The goalkeeper?s job is definitely the toughest of all soccer players. Even though a defender, midfielder or attacker can get off with a few blunders once in a while, a goal keeper?s blunders really are a lot more noticeable. To complicate things even further, modern goalkeepers have a whole lot more attributions than before. They need to coordinate the defense. They quite often have to work as sweepers, and they are able to fire off lethal counter attacks immediately after a clean save.

1 Versus 1 is a very popular routine. That being said, it?s very effective given that goal keepers are bound to become caught in a one on one challenge against an opposing attacker in practically every single game. Add to that, at beginner or youth levels, in which defenses are less demanding than they are with the professionals, 1-on-1s are quite typical for goalkeepers. You need to train them properly.

Ab Volley is one of the toughest goal keeping drills. If executed correctly, it?s an extremely effective one. Here?s how it goes: your goalie must remain on his bottom, in the very same position he?d do ab situps in. You or a teammate will need to throw the ball towards him and while he?s doing ab situps, he will pass it back to you. To speed things up a little, you can have an additional group of 8-10 players behind the goal, returning the balls back to the firing squad.

Automatic Fire. Have 8-10 players stand at about twenty to thirty yards from the goal, each with his or her own ball. At your signal, the attackers must, 1 by 1, run forward and kick the ball from a distance you specified earlier. Your goal keeper must be under a constant rain of shots, jumping from one particular post to the other to save the ball. It is not really that essential if he saves them or not, it is crucial that he understands the way to react rapidly and get up from the floor fast and be prepared for an additional shot.

Republicans already announcing U.S. Senate campaigns for 2014

(Reuters) - Former South Dakota Republican Governor Mike Rounds said on Thursday he will run in 2014 for a U.S. Senate seat now held by a Democrat, the second state where a Republican has jumped into the campaign two years before the election.

The announcement by Rounds came just weeks after President Barack Obama won re-election and Democrats unexpectedly strengthened their U.S. Senate majority. Rounds is running for the seat now held by Democratic Senator Tim Johnson.

Republican U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia on Monday said she would run for the U.S. Senate seat of incumbent Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller, who was first elected to the Senate in 1984.

The early entry of Republicans sparked speculation that they are trying to encourage the veteran Democrats to retire rather than face a long and expensive race for reelection.

Republicans failed to capitalize on several opportunities to gain seats in the Senate this year because of nasty battles between conservatives and more traditional Republicans in primaries, and gaffes by candidates during the campaign.

They lost Senate elections in Indiana and Missouri after conservative candidates made controversial comments about abortion and rape that hurt their support, particularly among women.

Democrats gained two seats in the election and now hold a Senate majority of 53 to 45, plus two independents who caucus with Democrats.

Rounds, 58, was elected governor in 2002 after serving a decade in the South Dakota state Senate and was reelected in 2006. Rounds is chief executive of an independent insurance agency with an office in Pierre, the state capital.

"I am here today to ask the people of South Dakota for their support and to allow me to work for them as their United States Senator in 2014," Rounds said in an appearance in Sioux Falls.

Rounds said there were many problems to solve at the federal level including deficit spending, healthcare reforms and fixing Social Security, and he urged cooperation in solving them.

"We need to become a country of cooperation instead of confrontation," Rounds said, adding that many of the most important decisions would be made in the U.S. Senate.

Johnson said in a statement he would wait until later in 2013 to announce his formal plans, "But I feel great, still have work to do, and I fully intend to put together a winning campaign in the weeks and months ahead."

Johnson was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996. He nearly died in December 2006 after suffering from bleeding into his brain, but returned to full Senate work in September 2007.

Johnson, who also served five terms in the U.S. House, said he had an excellent working relationship with Rounds while Rounds was South Dakota's governor.

"I consider Mike a friend, and I welcome him to the race," Johnson said.

Woman on trial in killing of Fla. lottery winner

Defendant Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore arrives in court at the Hillsborough County Courthouse for the opening statements in her case Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012 in Tampa, Fla. Moore is charged with the murder of Florida Lottery winner Abraham Shakespeare. (AP Photo/The Tampa Tribune, Jay Conner, Pool)

(AP) ? Abraham Shakespeare could barely read, wrote his name in block letters and had given away most of his $17 million in lottery winnings when he became friends with Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore, a calculating woman who later became his financial adviser, prosecutors said Wednesday.

During opening statements in Moore's first-degree murder trial in Tampa, assistant state attorney Jay Pruner said Moore swindled what was left of Shakespeare's winnings from his bank account in 2009, then killed him and buried his body under a concrete slab in her backyard.

Pruner said when Shakespeare won the lottery, his life "drastically and dramatically changed" ? and that the money caused all sorts of problems, eventually leading to his death. One detective testified that Moore told him that Shakespeare was tired of people asking him for money.

Moore, 40, wore a yellow button-down blouse and black pants to court, and her long, curly hair framed her face as she highlighted notes with a yellow marker during Wednesday's trial.

Her attorney, Byron Hileman, said there is no evidence that ties his client to the gun used to shoot Shakespeare.

"There are no eyewitnesses who can testify that Ms. Moore shot and killed Mr. Shakespeare or was present when he was shot and killed or had any part carrying out his murder," Hileman said, adding that the evidence against Moore is mostly circumstantial.

Later in the day, witnesses included two investigators from the county medical examiner's office and a sheriff's detective.

Dr. Dollette White, the assistant medical examiner that worked on Shakespeare's autopsy, said his body was "mummified" and partially skeletonized. She said his body had been underground for a few months, but it was difficult to pinpoint exactly how long based on decomposition.

White also said that two bullets were recovered from Shakespeare's body, both lodged near his spine and heart. X-rays of Shakespeare's chest were shown to the jury.

Both attorneys agreed on one thing: that by the time Shakespeare and Moore met, the man had already spent or given away most of his lottery winnings. Friends and acquaintances owed him millions of dollars, the lawyers said, and Pruner called him a "soft touch."

Moore befriended Shakespeare in late 2008, claiming she was writing a book "about how people were taking advantage of him," said Pruner.

Prosecutors said Moore became his financial adviser, eventually controlling every asset he had left, including an expensive home, the debt owed to him and a $1.5 million annuity. Pruner said that during the trial, he will prove that Moore shifted money from Shakespeare's bank accounts to her own, and that she formed a company in his name ? yet didn't allow him to withdraw money from the bank account attached to that company.

In April 2009, Shakespeare disappeared. Pruner said he was shot, killed and buried under a 30-by-30-foot concrete slab in the back of Moore's home.

Family didn't report him missing for seven months. During that time, Pruner said Moore simultaneously lied to Shakespeare's friends and family about seeing him around town while trying to pay others to say they had spotted him.

Pruner said she enlisted one of Shakespeare's friends, Greg Smith, to deliver a typed letter to Shakespeare's mother, ostensibly from Shakespeare ? even though he was barely literate.

Smith is expected to take the witness stand because he became a confidential informant and recorded numerous conversations and meetings with Moore ? who told police various stories about her relationship with Shakespeare and his disappearance.

In January 2010, investigators searched Moore's property and found Shakespeare's body.

Moore's attorney acknowledged that "we certainly would agree that Ms. Moore had some knowledge that something happened," and told a story about a meeting involving Shakespeare and a couple of guys at Moore's home.

"The fact is that something happened," said Hileman. "Ms. Moore may have suspected something happened but she was not an eyewitness to details."

The trial is expected to last two weeks.

New York governor orders insurers to speed up Sandy claims

(Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday imposed emergency regulations on insurers to speed the processing of claims from hundreds of thousands of state residents whose properties were damaged or destroyed when Superstorm Sandy struck a month ago.

Among the measures Cuomo unveiled was a requirement reducing the time limit for insurance company claims adjusters to respond to a claim to six days from 15 days.

He also said the state's insurance regulator would begin posting to the agency's website report cards on the performance of insurers, with the aim of making the companies more accountable for their response to customers needing assistance following the storm, which struck the Northeast on October 29.

The storm knocked out power to millions and damaged or destroyed at least 305,000 houses in New York, according to state estimates.

Homeowners have complained that they have struggled to get insurance adjusters to come their properties to begin critical repair work, Cuomo told a New York City press conference.

Insurance companies have received 360,000 claims so far, he said, adding that the emergency regulations, which are effective immediately, will make a "major, major difference."

Of the 24 insurers being rated by the state on the new report cards, Allstate Corp had the highest volume of customer complaints, nearly twice as many as the next company on the list. As a percentage of total claim volume, though, Allstate's ratio was one of the lower ones in the industry.

An Allstate spokeswoman was not immediately available to comment.

The head of the trade group representing property insurers in New York State said her members were in talks with officials as recently as this week about a voluntary approach to reducing claims adjustment times in the wake of Sandy.

"Obviously, they did not decide to do that," said Ellen Melchionni, president of the New York Insurance Association, in an interview. "None of the public policymakers in neighboring states have felt the need to do the things they've done in New York," she said. "We felt it was heavy handed."

A Cuomo administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that there had been talks on a voluntary program but said three of the state's largest insurers could not agree to the kind of firm timetable for adjusting claims that regulators wanted. The official did not name the three.

Melchionni said most insurers were already well within the old 15-day guideline, even where their adjusters had been hampered by a lack of access to damaged areas or a lack of gasoline to reach the affected homes.

She also acknowledged, though, that insurers had little choice but to comply with the new rules. The administration official said they are likely to stay in place until all Sandy-related claims are adjusted.

Slow claims adjustment is a common problem after major natural disasters like Sandy.

In 2009, a Louisiana court ordered the state's insurer of last resort to pay policyholders civil penalties because it took too long to start adjusting claims following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. With interest, those penalties now exceed $105 million.

Jeff Zucker To CNN: Former NBCUniversal Chief Will Reportedly Lead Network

By Peter Lauria and Lisa Richwine

Nov 27 (Reuters) - Jeff Zucker, a former head of NBCUniversal and the producer of Katie Couric's talk show, will be named president of Time Warner Inc's ratings-starved CNN cable news channel, a source close to the situation said on Tuesday.

Zucker will succeed departing CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton, who said in July he was leaving the once-dominant news network after nine years in the job amid a recent ratings slump.

The appointment of Zucker as the new president of CNN Worldwide will be announced by the end of next week, the source said. Zucker could not immediately be reached on Tuesday. A Time Warner spokesman had no comment.

Zucker gained a reputation as a news-producing whiz when he worked with Couric on NBC's "Today" show.

Now he will face the challenge of turning around CNN, the channel that pioneered around-the-clock cable news coverage when it was launched in 1980 by founder Ted Turner, but then saw its primetime ratings hit a 21-year low in this year's second quarter.

Since its beginnings, CNN has tried to hold the middle ground in its news coverage, a position that some blame for its ratings erosion. As CNN's viewership declined, ratings increased for rivals Fox News and MSNBC, which blend news with opinion and political commentary.

CNN "is a very large stage, and a lot needs to be done to fix it," the source told Reuters. Zucker "has been itching to get back in the game, and this is the best opportunity out there for him."

News Corp owns Fox, while MSNBC is now owned by cable giant Comcast Corp after its purchase of NBC two years ago that led to Zucker's ouster from NBCUniversal. The opinion programs on No. 1 cable news network Fox News skew conservative, while commentaries on MSNBC lean liberal.

Some industry experts argue that CNN needs to move out of the middle to regain lost ground.

"You never want to be stuck between two strong competitors, as they will divide the market and starve you out," said Adam Armbruster, a media industry consultant with Eckstein, Summers, Armbruster & Co.

Zucker "needs to bring his trademark 'star power' to the network and make them relevant and create regular viewers even when no big news story is breaking," Armbruster said.

CNN has lagged Fox News Channel and MSNBC in primetime viewers for more than a year. On a normal news night, CNN draws fewer than 1 million U.S. viewers in prime time, compared to about 2.7 million for Fox News Channel and about 1.5 million viewers for MSNBC, according to ratings data.

IDENTITY ISSUES

Though CNN remains profitable, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes said in August he was unsatisfied with CNN's low ratings and would seek to turn around the network with programming that was more compelling but remained non-partisan.

The network has struggled to find a programming identity in recent years, but not for lack of trying. It paired former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer with pundit Kathleen Parker for a talk show that failed miserably. It released perhaps its most notable personality in Larry King after more than two decades and replaced him with Piers Morgan. More recently, the network created a primetime show for its most youth-oriented host, Anderson Cooper, and enlisted popular chef Anthony Bourdain for a travel and food-related show.

CNN claimed a cable news ratings victory on the night of the U.S. presidential election in November. The network said it attracted 8.8 million total viewers, beating Fox News Channel by about 1 million.

CNN does have one advantage over its cable news competitors in that it attracts a much bigger digital audience. In October, CNN boasted 68 million unique online visitors. That topped the 56 million for NBC News Digital and the 35 million for the Fox News Digital Network, according to CNN.

As president, Zucker, who famously said that networks can't trade analog dollars for digital dimes, can attempt to upstream CNN's digital audience to the network and leverage its web reach for both ratings and financial gain.

RESPECTED NEWSMAN

During Zucker's tenure at NBC, he was intimately involved in the decision to move MSNBC hard left to counter Fox News, though that does not mean he will move CNN to the left, the source close to the situation said.

He also remained involved in decisions about programming and strategic direction of NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC after he was named CEO of NBCUniversal, said the source.

While Zucker's news chops have never been questioned, his tenure at NBC is often defined by the network's failures in primetime, as his rise to CEO coincided with NBC's fall from its top spot on the ratings perch. It has resided in the primetime ratings basement among the big four TV networks for the better part of a decade. This year, however, NBC has experienced a bit of a resurgence in primetime and ranks first once again among viewers 18-49 years old.

Zucker was known for having little patience or interest in Hollywood or the delicate personalities that inhabit it, as evidenced by his handling of the Jay Leno-Conan O'Brien late night switch, in which he threatened to "ice," or prevent O'Brien from working, for two years at one point during the standoff. He had a similarly unsentimental approach with executives, firing NBC Entertainment boss Kevin Reilly unexpectedly to bring in Ben Silverman, only to fire Silverman two years later.

But Zucker's reputation in the news business should help him attract strong talent to CNN, said one former industry executive who has worked with Zucker. "He has so much credibility in the news space. News people will want to work for him," the source said.

Any fitness lifestyle has to be supported by the correct fuel.?? When I first started my real fitness journey (not counting all of the times I had started and quit), I was bombarded with diet plans and food recommendations that all had one common theme: protein, lots of protein; mostly chicken, fish and egg whites.? The problem was I was vegetarian and then became vegan shortly thereafter (a vegan does not consume meat, dairy or egg products).? I had spent a year trying to load myself up with cottage cheese, ready made protein shakes I did not like and cardboard tasting protein bars to fulfill the protein quota of the world I felt like I was living in but I failed miserably.? I was hungry.? I was bored.? I was tired.? And I wasn?t losing weight.?

The more active I became, the more serious I had to get about my food.? Instead of finding substitutions, I went for real food.? The truth is ALL vegetables and fruit have protein in it (did you know broccoli has more protein per one hundred calories than steak?? Yes, you?d have to eat a lot but still?.)and there are MORE than enough vegetarian/vegan options to fulfill your protein needs.? While vegetarian/veganism isn?t necessarily a ?convenient? choice, it has been a very smart decision in my development as an athlete (and I never used that word to describe myself before).? I can do things now that I never did even in my teenage years.? And my arms look pretty good.

Beyond tofu (which is what most people tend to think of when it comes to protein for non meat-eaters), there are beans and legumes, (full of fiber and low in calories), nuts, seeds and their butters (brimming with healthy fats), tempeh (a fermented soy product.? Fermentation is very good for your digestive system), seitan (a meaty high protein, wheat meat substitute), grains (quinoa, an ancient grain has actually all of the amino acids present therefore making it a ?complete? protein),? blue green algae such as spirulina and chlorella and, again, fruits and vegetables.? In addition, there are quite a few soy substitutes on the market in the form of burgers, sausages, yogurt, milk and cheese.?? For those who feel like they need a little extra boost, there are several reputable vegan protein powders on the market.

?Because the number of us eating more plant based has grown, our needs are being met a lot more in the fitness community.? We are no longer seen as the ?puny folks? in the gym.? (And it helps that Venus Williams just won at Wimbeldon on a raw vegan diet).? As with any change in eating, it requires knowing your body, being in tune with what works and being willing to do the work to accompany your lifestyle.? In our world, it?s all about preparation and dedication.? Using these two tools will serve you well, regardless of what diet you choose to practice.? In the end, it?s about a healthy choices and a healthy lifestyle.? That?s what people see when they see us.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Police in Nigeria say gunmen attacked a major police station near the country's capital that is holding members of a radical Islamist sect, freeing some prisoners.

A statement confirmed an attack happened early Monday morning at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad station near Abuja. Federal police spokesman Frank Mba said the gunmen's assault allowed some 30 prisoners to escape. Mba said 25 had already been recaptured.

That station is holding suspected members of the radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram. Mba denied any Boko Haram members escaped in the attack, though security officials routinely downplay such attacks.

Boko Haram is blamed for killing more than 760 people this year alone. The attack Monday comes after suicide bombings at a church at a military base Sunday killed at least 11.

Rapid changes in climate don't slow some lizards

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? One tropical lizard's tolerance to cold is stiffer than scientists had suspected. A new study shows that the Puerto Rican lizard Anolis cristatellus has adapted to the cooler winters of Miami. The results also suggest that this lizard may be able to tolerate temperature variations caused by climate change.

"We are not saying that climate change is not a problem for lizards. It is a major problem. However, these findings indicate that the thermal physiology of tropical lizards is more easily altered than previously proposed," said Duke biologist Manuel Leal, co-author of the study, which appears in the Dec. 6 issue of The American Naturalist.

Scientists previously proposed that because lizards were cold-blooded, they wouldn't be able to tolerate or adapt to cooler temperatures.

Humans, however, introduced Puerto Rican native A. cristatellus to Miami around 1975. In Miami, the average temperature is about 10 degrees Celsius cooler in winter than in Puerto Rico. The average summer temperatures are similar.

Leal and his graduate student Alex Gunderson captured A. cristatellus from Miami's Pinecrest area and also from northeastern Puerto Rico. They brought the animals back to their North Carolina lab, slid a thermometer in each lizard's cloaca and chilled the air to a series of cooler temperatures. The scientists then watched how easy it was for the lizards to right themselves after they had been flipped on their backs.

The lizards from Miami flipped themselves over in temperatures that were 3 degrees Celsius cooler than the lizards from Puerto Rico. Animals that flip over at lower temperatures have higher tolerances for cold temperatures, which is likely advantageous when air temperatures drop, Leal said.

"It is very easy for the lizards to flip themselves over when they are not cold or not over-heating. It becomes harder for them to flip over as they get colder, down to the point at which they are unable to do so," he said.

At that point, called the critical temperature minimum, the lizards aren't dead. They've just lost control of their coordination. "It is like a human that is suffering from hypothermia and is beginning to lose his or her balance or is not capable of walking. It is basically the same problem. The body temperature is too cold for muscles to work properly," he said.

Leal explained that a difference of 3 degrees Celsius is "relatively large and when we take into account that it has occurred in approximately 35 generations, it is even more impressive." Most evolutionary change happens on the time scale of a few hundred, thousands or millions of years. Thirty-five years is a time scale that happens during a human lifetime, so we can witness this evolutionary change, he said.

The lizards' cold tolerance also "provides a glimpse of hope for some tropical species," Leal added, cautioning that at present scientists don't know how quickly tolerance to high temperatures -- another important consequence of climate change -- can evolve.

He and Gunderson are now working on the heat-tolerance experiments, along with tests to study whether other lizard species can adjust to colder temperatures.

Using biomarkers from prehistoric human feces to track settlement and agriculture

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? For researchers who study Earth's past environment, disentangling the effects of climate change from those related to human activities is a major challenge, but now University of Massachusetts Amherst geoscientists have used a biomarker from human feces in a completely new way to establish the first human presence, the arrival of grazing animals and human population dynamics in a landscape.

Doctoral student Robert D'Anjou and his advisor Raymond Bradley, director of the Climate System Research Center at UMass Amherst, with UMass colleagues Nick Balascio and David Finkelstein, describe their findings in the current online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We are really excited about how well this method worked," D'Anjou says. "Without even knowing it, early settlers were recording their history for us, and in the most unlikely of ways, in their poop. The prehistoric settlers and their livestock pooped and their feces washed into the lake, which over time left a record of trace amounts of specific molecules that are only produced in the intestines of higher mammals. When you find these molecules at certain concentrations and in specific ratios, it provides an unmistakable indicator that people were living in the area."

Bradley adds, "This approach opens the door to other studies, where the presence of humans is uncertain; we believe it has great potential for much wider applications in archaeology."

D'Anjou carried out the work just north of the Arctic Circle, at Lake Liland in the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, where humans were thought to have lived in prehistoric settlements from the early Iron Age through the Viking period. They extracted two sediment cores from the lake bottom and used radiocarbon measurements and the presence of volcanic ash from Iceland to establish their chronology. The sediments provided a continuous record extending back roughly 7,000 years.

Paleoclimatologists have long used markers in lakebed sediments, such as charcoal from humans' fires and pollen from cultivated plants, as a natural archive of environmental changes to estimate when humans first began having an impact. But these indirect indicators must be used with care when reconstructing the history of a place because it's not always clear that they indicate human activity in the same area.

By contrast, the presence of a molecular biomarker directly linked to humans, one transmitted through their bowel movements, offers "a strong human signal," as the authors put it, one that can be dated with "excellent chronological control." D'Anjou and colleagues extracted the compound coprostanol, a molecular marker formed from the digestion of cholesterol in the human gut, from the sediment, plus other sterols characteristic of other mammals to estimate the presence of sheep and cattle. From these, they were able to produce a long-term record of the presence and relative population size of humans extending back over thousands of years at the site.

In addition, the geoscientists used two other molecular markers to reconstruct the vegetation history: relative length of carbon molecules found in leaf waxes (different in forest and grassland), and pyrolytic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) as evidence of fire in the Lake Liland area. They say that taken together, the sediment cores, vegetation changes and fire records clearly define a pre-settlement period with no detectable human activity in the lake's water catchment area from about 7,300 to 2,250 years ago.

At that point, however, changes in the background state appear in the record, marking an "abrupt shift" to significantly increased levels of pyrolytic PAH first, followed by increased human fecal material. This likely indicates that as people moved in, they first cleared the land by burning before establishing a permanent settlement, the researchers say. "This interpretation is bolstered," they add, by the leaf wax record that shows a "marked transition to a more grassland-dominated landscape beginning at this time."

After the initial influx of people to the region, D'Anjou and colleagues say the record shows a lull in human activity from about 2,040 to 1,900 years ago, reflected in all markers. After this, the human and livestock populations steadily increased to a local maximum around the year 500, based on the fecal record, then fell again to a second minimum around the year 850.

The climate scientists note a further decline in human activity and population to another minimum at about AD 1750 that coincided with the highest relative grassland cover for the entire 7,300-year history. Findings related to human activity over the past 7,300 years in northern Norway correlate well with other climate reconstructions, in particular summer temperature patterns indicating poor vs. fruitful growing seasons. This shows that the early settlers were vulnerable to small changes in summer temperature at this far northern location.

Overall, the authors say, the new fecal markers are likely to prove valuable in many other places, to distinguish natural from human factors that influenced the environment in the past.

Egypt's president to meet judges over power grab

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi will meet senior judges on Monday to try to ease a crisis over his seizure of new powers which has set off violent protests reminiscent of last year's revolution which brought him to power.

Egypt's stock market plunged on Sunday in its first day open since Mursi issued a decree late on Thursday temporarily widening his powers and shielding his decisions from judicial review, drawing accusations he was behaving like a new dictator.

More than 500 people have been injured in clashes between police and protesters worried Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood aims to dominate the post-Hosni Mubarak era after winning Egypt's first democratic parliamentary and presidential elections this year.

One Muslim Brotherhood member was killed and 60 people were hurt on Sunday in an attack on the main office of the Brotherhood in the Egyptian Nile Delta town of Damanhour, the website of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party said.

Egypt's highest judicial authority hinted at compromise to avert a further escalation, though Mursi's opponents want nothing less than the complete cancellation of a decree they see as a danger to democracy.

The Supreme Judicial Council said Mursi's decree should apply only to "sovereign matters", suggesting it did not reject the declaration outright, and called on judges and prosecutors, some of whom began a strike on Sunday, to return to work.

Mursi would meet the council on Monday, state media said.

Mursi's office repeated assurances that the measures would be temporary, and said he wanted dialogue with political groups to find "common ground" over what should go in Egypt's constitution, one of the issues at the heart of the crisis.

Hassan Nafaa, a professor of political science at Cairo University, saw an effort by the presidency and judiciary to resolve the crisis, but added their statements were "vague". "The situation is heading towards more trouble," he said.

Sunday's stock market fall of nearly 10 percent - halted only by automatic curbs - was the worst since the uprising that toppled Mubarak in February, 2011.

Images of protesters clashing with riot police and tear gas wafting through Cairo's Tahrir Square were an unsettling reminder of that uprising. Activists were camped in the square for a third day, blocking traffic with makeshift barricades. Nearby, riot police and protesters clashed intermittently.

"BACK TO SQUARE ONE"

Mursi's supporters and opponents plan big demonstrations on Tuesday that could be a trigger for more street violence.

"We are back to square one, politically, socially," said Mohamed Radwan of Pharos Securities, an Egyptian brokerage firm.

Mursi's decree marks an effort to consolidate his influence after he successfully sidelined Mubarak-era generals in August. It reflects his suspicions of a judiciary little reformed since the Mubarak era.

Issued just a day after Mursi received glowing tributes from Washington for his work brokering a deal to end eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas, the decree drew warnings from the West to uphold democracy. Washington has leverage because of billions of dollars it sends in annual military aid.

"The United States should be saying this is unacceptable," former presidential nominee John McCain, leading Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on Fox News.

"We thank Mr. Mursi for his efforts in brokering the ceasefire with Hamas ... But this is not what the United States of America's taxpayers expect. Our dollars will be directly related to progress toward democracy."

The Mursi administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms that will complete Egypt's democratic transformation. Yet leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

"There is no room for dialogue when a dictator imposes the most oppressive, abhorrent measures and then says 'let us split the difference'," prominent opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said on Saturday.

WARNINGS FROM WEST

Investors had grown more confident in recent months that a legitimately elected government would help Egypt put its economic and political problems behind it. The stock market's main index had risen 35 percent since Mursi's victory. It closed on Sunday at its lowest level since July 31.

Political turmoil also raised the cost of government borrowing at a treasury bill auction on Sunday.

"Investors know that Mursi's decisions will not be accepted and that there will be clashes on the street," said Osama Mourad of Arab Financial Brokerage.

Just last week, investor confidence was helped by a preliminary agreement with the International Monetary Fund over a $4.8 billion loan needed to shore up state finances.

Mursi's decree removes judicial review of decisions he takes until a new parliament is elected, expected early next year.

It also shields the Islamist-dominated assembly writing Egypt's new constitution from a raft of legal challenges that have threatened it with dissolution, and offers the same protection to the Islamist-controlled upper house of parliament.

"I am really afraid that the two camps are paving the way for violence," said Nafaa. "Mursi has misjudged this, very much so. But forcing him again to relinquish what he has done will appear a defeat."

Many of Mursi's political opponents share the view that Egypt's judiciary needs reform, though they disagree with his methods. Mursi's new powers allowed him to sack the prosecutor general who took his job during the Mubarak era and is unpopular among reformists of all stripes.

(AP) ? A 20-year-old state beauty queen was killed during a running gun battle between soldiers and the gang of drug traffickers she was traveling with in northern Mexico, the chief prosecutor of the state of Sinaloa said Monday.

In a scene reminiscent of the 2011 movie "Miss Bala" ? or "Miss Bullet" ? the body of Maria Susana Flores Gamez was found lying near an assault rifle on a rural road in a mountainous area of the drug-plagued state. It was unclear if she had used the weapon.

"She was with the gang of criminals, but we cannot say whether she participated in the shootout," state prosecutor Marco Antonio Higuera said. "That's what we're going to have to investigate."

The doe-eyed, slender brunette was voted the 2012 Woman of Sinaloa in a beauty pageant in February. She had earlier competed for the other, more prestigious state beauty contest, Our Beauty Sinaloa, but didn't win.

Higuera said Flores Gamez was traveling in one of the vehicles that engaged soldiers in an hours-long chase and running gun battle on Saturday. Higuera said two other members of the drug gang were killed and four were detained.

The shootout began when the gunmen opened fire on a Mexican army patrol. Soldiers gave chase and cornered the gang at a safe house near the town of Mocorito. They escaped, and the gunbattle continued along a nearby roadway, where the gang's vehicles were eventually stopped. Six vehicles, drugs and weapons were seized following the confrontation.

It was at least the third instance in which a beauty queen or pageant contestants have been linked to Mexico's violent drug gangs.

In 2008, former Miss Sinaloa Laura Zuniga was stripped of her crown in the Hispanoamerican Queen pageant, after she was detained on suspicion of drug and weapons violations. She was later released without charges.

Zuniga was detained in western Mexico in late 2010 along with seven men, some of them suspected drug traffickers. Authorities found a large stash of weapons, ammunition and $53,300 with them inside a vehicle.

In 2011, a Colombian former model and pageant contestant was detained along with Jose Jorge Balderas, an accused drug trafficker and suspect in the 2010 bar shooting of Salvador Cabanas, a former star for Paraguay's national football team and Mexico's Club America. She was also later released.

Higuera said Flores Gamez has been turned over to relatives for burial.

"This is a sad situation," Higuera told a local radio station. She had been enrolled in media courses at a local university, and had been modeling and pageants since at least 2009.

Javier Valdez, the author of a 2009 book about narco ties to beauty pageants entitled "Miss Narco," said "this is a recurrent story."

"There is a relationship, sometimes pleasant and sometimes tragic, between organized crime and the beauty queens, the pageants, the beauty industry itself," Valdez said.

"It is a question of privilege, power, money, but also a question of need," said Valdez. "For a lot of these young women, it is easy to get involved with organized crime, in a country that doesn't offer many opportunities for young people."

Sometimes drug traffickers seek out beauty queens, but sometimes the models themselves look for narco boyfriends, Valdez said.

"I once wrote about a girl I knew of who was desperate to get a narco boyfriend," he said. "She practically took out a classified ad saying 'Looking for a Narco'."

The stories seldom end well. In the best of cases, a beautiful woman with a tear-stained face is marched before the press in handcuffs. In the worst of cases, they simply disappear.

"They are disposable objects, the lowest link in the chain of criminal organizations, the young men recruited as gunmen and the pretty young women who are tossed away in two or three years, or are turned into police or killed."

Divided Kuwait limps toward boycott-hit elections

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? The message from Kuwait's emir is blunt heading into this week's parliamentary elections: Opposition factions should express dissent in the legislature, and not in the streets. The response from the opposition is equally uncompromising: We're not satisfied with what we can accomplish through parliament, so we're boycotting the vote.

There is little middle ground as Kuwait stumbles toward its second election this year for the most politically empowered parliament in the Gulf Arab states, which serves as a check on the emir, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah. Violent protests and crackdowns on activists ? until recently rare in Kuwait ? have contributed to the high-stakes tension.

The outcome Saturday is certain to hand the ruling family and its allies a near-sweep of friendly lawmakers. Yet that is not necessarily good news for the stability of a country that has ricocheted from one political crisis to the next for nearly a year, including street clashes between security forces and an opposition coalition that ranges from hardline Islamists to youth activists.

For years, that legislature has served as a forum for the opposition to press their demands. But with the opposition's boycott likely to take them into self-exile from the political system, the worry is their new soapbox will be the street demonstrations like those that have engulfed many other Arab states in the past two years.

The potential fallout goes well beyond its borders. Any major upheavals in OPEC member Kuwait have potential repercussions on oil prices and the Pentagon's plans to use the nation as its hub for ground forces in efforts to counter the growth of Iran's military.

Gulf Arab rulers have so far ridden out the Arab Spring uprisings through a combination of factors including crackdowns and payouts to buy off potential dissenters. But the Gulf's biggest unrest by far ? a 21-month-old revolt against Bahrain's Western-allied monarchy ? shows no sign of easing and poses some the same quandaries as Kuwait for Washington: the need to maintain critical security alliances, but also to pay attention to shifting political forces in the region.

"There is a danger that the tensions between a ruling family (in Kuwait) intent on preserving its power and privilege and an energized opposition bent on security meaningful reform might escalate into open confrontation," said Kristian Coates-Ulrichsen, a research fellow who follows Gulf affairs at the London School of Economics.

"The example of Bahrain shows how everyone loses out in this scenario," he added, "but that alone is no guarantee that Kuwaitis can or will pull back from the brink."

Kuwait's protest alliance is held together by claims that the emir Al Sabah overstepped his authority by changing voting laws in an apparent attempt to undermine opposition and reformist electoral chances. Beyond that, there are a wide range of demands from all the different factions involved in the boycott, from Islamists wanting a greater say in the government to liberals wanting more openness in general.

The showdowns take forms similar to those in other parts of the region: clampdowns on Web activists and arrest sweeps against perceived backers of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that now leads Egypt and has a resurgent profile since the Arab Spring.

Last week, Kuwait's Interior Ministry announced the arrest of four people on charges of insulting the emir with posts on Twitter. Similar arrests have taken place across the Gulf and, earlier this month, the United Arab Emirates imposed new Internet laws that can bring jail time for Web posts deemed offensive to rulers.

Kuwaiti authorities also have echoed fears from other Gulf palaces over what they view as expanding threats from the Muslim Brotherhood. Dubai's police chief, Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim, has warned of an "international plot" to overthrow the Gulf rulers.

The Islamists in Kuwait ? while a powerful force ? insist they are a distinctive, homegrown group that does not seek to topple the ruling system but wants a greater say in how the country is run. Their critics worry that this means a push toward stricter Islamic codes such as limits on non-Muslim worship or censoring artists and writers in one of the most politically open societies in the Gulf.

The past year has brought almost nonstop ? and highly complex ? political turmoil.

Islamists and their tribal allies won parliament elections in February and immediately pushed for greater clout in policy-making affairs. The Constitutional Court later disbanded parliament amid claims of flaws in the electoral district map, and reinstated the former government-friendly chamber from elections in 2009. That body, however, never managed to convene a session.

To further complicate things: The emir stunned the nation by wiping out the country's unusual four-votes-per-person system in favor of the standard one vote. Opponents say the new formula dilutes the ability of opposition groups to forge alliances and will increase the risks of vote buying and bribery.

"We will have puppetry, not a real parliament," said Mohammed al-Hatlani, a former lawmaker supporting the election boycott.

Liberal and youth groups ? while deeply opposed to the Islamist agenda ? have joined the boycott drive as a way to press for their Arab Spring-inspired demands for greater political and social freedoms. The unexpected alliance with Islamists and conservative tribes has startled even veterans of Kuwait's pugnacious politics.

Abdullatif al-Duaij, a prominent Kuwait liberal figure now living in the U.S., worries that fellow liberals looking for more openness have "lost their compass" by siding with the Islamists and others pushing the boycott.

"Today it's either you vote or you don't," he said. "There is nothing in between."

A series of protests and street clashes in recent months led the emir to order a ban on political gatherings of more than 20 people. In a message last week, he tried both threats and patriot appeals to cool down tensions.

"It is a great tragedy to have calls to take to the street," the emir said in comments carried by the official Kuwait News Agency. "Why the chaos and riots? Why the screaming and wailing and disrupting the business of the state and harming the interests of the people?"

It's all likely to leave Kuwait even more politically fractured and the new parliament facing challenges over its legitimacy.

In most of the Gulf, a parliament under pressure would matter little since elected bodies have very limited powers. Kuwait, however, stands out. Its 50-seat parliament has wide authority to pass laws and question ? or even dismiss ? members of the government.

Opposition lawmakers have publicly accused top officials, including members of the ruling family, of charges such as corruption and attempts to muzzle dissent. But even many protesters were stunned last month when an opposition leader, Musallam al-Barrack, broke taboos and openly denounced the emir. He was later arrested.

"He crossed all the red lines and shattered the boundaries of permissible opposition," said the researcher Coates-Ulrichsen. "The experience from North Africa and elsewhere in the Arab Spring shows that once these barriers are broken it is impossible to reconstruct them."

Guest Post: Spaghetti al Nero di Seppia | The Hungry Australian

Sometime last year I came across a fellow Adelaide blog called A Kitchen for Friends as it?s publisher, one Justin Chai, published a post in which he said some nice things about this blog.

Later, Justin and his lovely girlfriend, Janice, came along to an Adelaide Food Bloggers Group meet up at the Adelaide Showgrounds Farmers Market. Justin (and Janice) were exactly as they came across in Justin?s blog ? friendly, down-to-earth, enthusiastic and passionate about food.

Since that early meeting Justin and Janice have started catering parties and are even doing the canap?s for a wedding in December. It started innocently enough ? Justin offered to throw a work colleagues? daughter a 3-course 21st birthday dinner ? but then other people started asking them to cater their gatherings and who knows where it will end. It?s all very exciting and I?m thrilled for them.

So when I knew I was going to be having a very busy October/November, I asked Justin if he?d like to do a guest post for The Hungry Australian. It?s a little later than we both expected (sorry Justin!) but I?m delighted to now hand him the reigns so he can share some memories of his recent trip to Venice and a very interesting pasta dish with us.

Welcome Justin!

PS Don?t forget to scroll to the bottom of the post for a photo of Justin and Janice (centre) and friends eating this dish!

From traditional eateries nestled within its coastal towns to unassuming trattorias hidden away in the maze of alleyways sprawled out across its bustling cities, almost every food stop we made in Italy left us with memories of blissful culinary experiences.

?
The Venetian island of Burano houses more than just its iconic rainbow-coloured buildings and beautiful laces. Populated by a tightly knit community which continues to live of the cornucopia of ocean bounty, it is of no surprise that the locals here treat their seafood with the utmost care and respect.
?
But one particular Venetian food establishment and the humble creation it birthed from the confines of its age-old kitchen well-deserves a written piece of its own.
?
The?Trattoria da Romano?is a perfect example of such a culture. Even?Anthony Bourdain?himself sings its praises in one of the many travel destinations he covers on his?No Reservations?television series. Of course we ordered the highly recommended ?Go? fish risotto: perfectly cooked rice grains in a milky white broth which seemed to just burst with heavenly flavours of the sea!
?
But if the risotto was analogous to?yin, may I then introduce you to its?yang, its black brotha? from another motha??
?
Friends, meet the?Spaghetti al Nero di Seppia!
?

So what exactly is it? Well, do you remember the last time you saw a David Attenborough documentary on sea creatures? Remember seeing a squid doing what looked like an underwater fart ? releasing black clouds all over a poor shark which just wanted lunch? That?s right people, we ate all of that black goo?
?
?And boy was it good! As I licked my fork, spoon, plate, fingers ? well, just about anything which came into contact with that rather unflattering yet simply delectable pasta ? I looked around the table to my travel companions and knew right away that our thoughts were as coherent as ever.
?
How could we possibly go back to Australian pasta after eating this?!!!
?
It was presented in such a simple manner yet it was so rich in flavour! It somewhat frustrated me because I just could not comprehend how they could make it taste so good when there seemed to be so little ingredients on display. But that dish at Burano left me inspired and determined to reproduce what I ate there with Australia?s very own produce. It also taught me that food does not always have to be elaborate to taste good.
?
So here?s my amateur take on producing simplicity on a plate!
Spaghetti del Nero di Seppi

Recipe type: Main

Author: Justin Chai, A Kitchen for Friends

Prep time: 20 mins

Cook time: 10 mins

Total time: 30 mins

Serves: 4

Pasta with squid ink ? a goth looking pasta with all the flavours of the sea!

  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 1 red onion
  • 1/2 bunch flat leaf parsley leaves
  • 2 bird?s eye chillies
  • 400g whole prawns (raw)
  • 500g whole squid
  • Squid ink (from ink sac)
  • EVOO
  • 1 cup of dry white wine
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 400g tomato puree
  • 500g cooked spaghetti
  1. Finely dice the garlic cloves, red onion and parsley leaves.
  2. De-seed the birds-eye chillies and finely dice them as well
  3. De-shell and de-vein the fresh prawns.
  4. Place the prawn shells and heads in small pot, fill it with just enough water to cover the shells and bring it to a gentle boil. Once the stock begins to boil, lower the gas and allow it to simmer for 20-30 minutes.
  5. Now on to the daunting (and messy!) task of cleaning, prepping ? well basically, giving a total make-over to one of the cephalopod family?s many ugly members. We?re going to try keeping the task as clean as possible, but don?t test your luck ? you might want to replace that white t-shirt pronto.
  6. Start off by pulling the head and tentacles portion off from the body.
  7. Now, carefully remove the ink sac in one piece from innards.
  8. Bring the sac to the kitchen sink (trust me on this one), gently puncture the sac and empty the ink into a small bowl filled with 20ml of water.
  9. Beware of sneaky squirts! Squeeze and squeeze with all your might people, because we will need every drop of that blackish goodness to give our pasta some character!
  10. Cut across the head, separating the tentacles as a whole. Discard those horrid looking eyeballs and any innards you may find.
  11. Using a sharp knife, slice through the wings and separate them from the body.
  12. Slide your finger underneath the purplish skin lining its body and wings, peel it off and discard.
  13. Remove backbone from the tube.
  14. Using a long spoon, scrape and discard more gooey innards out of the tube.
  15. Give all the different squid parts a thorough wash.
  16. Slice the tubular body into 1 cm rings, the wings and tentacles in bite-sized pieces and set aside.
  17. With all the prep work done, time to bring on the heat!
  18. Start off by lining a pan with a few splashes of extra virgin olive oil over low to medium heat.
  19. Saut? the combination of finely diced onions and garlic until the onions appear translucent ? releasing that inviting aroma we all love.
  20. Turn up the gas to medium and deglaze the pan with a cup of dry white wine.
  21. Allow things to simmer, eventually reducing the liquid down to 1/3 of the original amount.
  22. Now, add approximately 400ml of the prawn stock you made earlier to the pan followed by the finely diced chilies, tomato paste and puree.
  23. Next comes the squid pieces and all that sea goodness from its ink!
  24. Mix everything around to incorporate.
  25. Bring the liquid up to a gentle simmer and then allow it to reduce to a viscous consistency. Patience is key here. You don?t want the sauce to be too runny. Rather, the task here is to rid of at least 2/3 of the sauce?s water content ? retaining the essence of flavour in the medium which will coat our pasta. You?ll thank me later.
  26. Once the right consistency has been achieved, add in the prawns ? being really careful not to overcook them. 1-2 minutes should suffice.
  27. Throw in half the chopped up parsley leaves, reserving the rest when you plate up.
  28. Season with sea salt and black pepper (although you shouldn?t have to do much of it because the natural seafood flavours from the prawn and squid will be sure to boldly make themselves known to your palate.)
  29. Now all that?s left is to mix it all up with your favourite pasta (good ol? spaghetti will suit it pretty well) and serve it up to your soon to be goth-looking friends!

Now then, whoever said black lips weren?t cool anymore?
