Travelers, cargo stranded as airports, rails assess damage

(Reuters) - As rail, transit, airline and port workers dug through debris, dealt with power outages and assessed damage on Tuesday from massive storm Sandy, it was increasingly clear that restoring full transportation would take some time .

The storm flooded tracks and roads, felled trees and downed power lines. It could be days or weeks before travelers and cargo are moving again normally, officials said.

The three major New York area airports, which serve the nation's busiest airspace, remained closed on Tuesday, but officials later said two of the three -- John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport -- would reopen on Wednesday with limited service.

However, they still had no estimate for a full restoration of service. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said LaGuardia Airport remained closed. Between them, the three airports handle 300,000 passengers a day.

Nearly 19,000 flights have been canceled since Sunday, according to flight tracking service FlightAware.com.

Airlines said they planned to restart service Tuesday at some East Coast airports, including Boston and Philadelphia. Both Dulles and Reagan National in Washington, D.C., were open during the storm and airlines are starting to bring personnel and planes back. Limited operations were expected to begin Tuesday afternoon, said Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokeswoman Kimberly Gibbs.

JetBlue spokeswoman Allison Steinberg said the carrier planned to resume operations at New York area airports on Wednesday afternoon.

Even with JFK and Newark resuming limited services, travel itineraries will likely be tangled throughout the week as airlines get staff, planes and passengers into position.

"It could be four to five days before we start to see schedules get back to normal," said Jeanenne Tornatore, a senior editor with online travel agency Orbitz Worldwide.

NECESSARY REPAIRS

Most Amtrak service along the busy Northeast corridor remained suspended for a second day Tuesday, but officials were working to reopen some services Wednesday.

"We have crews out there right now assessing and making necessary repairs," said Amtrak spokeswoman Christina Leeds.

United Parcel Service, the world's largest package delivery company, said it had resumed deliveries to hospitals and clinics in Manhattan and New Jersey where roads are safe.

No deliveries were being made in Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. Government officials only want emergency responders out in such areas, as well Delaware, New Jersey, and parts of Maryland and Virginia, a UPS spokeswoman said.

FedEx Corp said it was working to resume service in affected areas on Wednesday, but that hub airport closures and storm debris would affect service. "If you're at a house blockaded by fallen trees, we won't be able to get to it," said spokesman Scott Fiedler.

In New York, workers from the Port Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration are assessing damage at major airports, including power issues, possible damage to structures and other safety checks, the FAA and the Port Authority said.

Airlines needed to bring back planes, which were flown out to avoid the storm, before service could resume.

"We are focused on reopening as quickly as possible. But we will not compromise safety," said Port Authority spokesman Pasquale DiFulco. "We need to walk the runways and make sure there's no debris."

He declined to estimate when they would reopen, saying "a lot of things are outside our control."

The reopening of New York's transit system will play a large role in reopening the airports, because many of the workers at security checkpoints, customs and concessions, and baggage handlers and flight crews rely on public transportation.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it could take four or five days to restore service on the largest U.S. transit system.

"The availability of public transportation will also play into the New York plan, too -- so it remains very, very fluid," said JetBlue spokeswoman Steinberg.

STRANDED

About 220 travelers remain stranded at the airports -- 100 at John F. Kennedy and 60 each at Newark Liberty and LaGuardia, DiFulco said. They were given cots and at least one food vendor was required to stay open 24 hours at each terminal.

"We hate to see anybody stranded," DiFulco said. "We're doing everything we can to keep people comfortable."

Flights resumed Tuesday at Stewart International Airport, about 60 miles north of Manhattan, near Newburgh, New York. The first commercial flight since the storm was expected to arrive around noon Tuesday, DiFulco said.

Railway freight companies were also working to restore service. CSX Corp, the nation's second-largest publicly traded railway company, said its network remains closed from Richmond, Virginia, to Albany, New York, and that it had halted traffic originating on other lines traveling to most points between Boston and Philadelphia.

CSX said it still had a lot of its track to inspect, that it had found flooding, downed trees and power outages, and that teams were removing trees, reinstalling crossing gates and ensuring generators were running to guard against power outages.

Norfolk Southern Corp said it was waiting for floodwater to subside, was clearing snow in western Virginia and West Virginia, and had a power line across tracks in Cleveland.

Airlines could lose $175 million in revenue from flights canceled because of the storm, said Michael Boyd, an aviation consultant with Boyd Group International in Evergreen, Colorado.

"None of it is life-threatening corporately, but it is significant," he said.

Boyd said Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United would be among the carriers hardest hit financially. He said AMR Corp's American Airlines operates 25 percent of JFK flights.

"From the airline perspective, closing your major hubs for several days is worth of a lot of revenue," said Carter Leake, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets in Richmond, Virginia.

Airlines have high fixed costs and the loss of revenue would likely lower profits, he said.

Philadelphia's airport did not close but Monday flights were canceled. "We had no damage to the facility, we had no flooding, so we were very fortunate," spokeswoman Victoria Lupica said.

Germany's Lufthansa has an inbound and outbound flight, and cargo carriers have resumed some flights, she said.

Delta Air Lines said it resumed flights to Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon.

Atlantic City's airport was closed except for military flights. Spirit Airlines, the main commercial carrier there, may resume some service later on Tuesday, said South Jersey Transportation Authority spokesman Kevin Rehmann.

Top 10 Fitness Trends Picked For 2013 ? CBS Chicago

Oct. 29, 2012 ? Forget fancy fitness fads. Your body is the only equipment you need for one of the hottest fitness trends: body-weight workouts.

A new survey of fitness trends shows body-weight training, including back-to-basics exercises like push-ups, planks, and pull-ups, is expected to be one of the top 10 fitness trends of 2013.

Researchers say people have been using their own body weight for centuries as a form of resistance training. But this is the first time it has made it into the trend survey, because gyms are now packaging it as part of exercise programs.

?Body-weight exercises are a proven way to get and stay fit,? says researcher Walt Thompson, PhD, of Georgia State University. ?In a time when many people are concerned with cutting expenses, body-weight exercises are a great way to feel great and look toned without a big financial investment.?

Top Fitness Trends Predicted for 2013

Taking the top spot in the fitness trend survey for the sixth year in a row are fitness professionals.

Researchers say education and certification programs for health and fitness professionals are experiencing exponential growth. The number of employed fitness trainers is projected to rise by 29% from 251,400 in 2010 to 311,800 in 2020.

According to the survey, the top 10 fitness trends predicted for 2013 are:

1. Educated, certified, and experienced fitness professionals ? Jobs for fitness workers are expected to rise much faster than the average for all other occupations, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

2. Strength training ? In the No. 2 spot for the second year in a row, strength training continues to be a strong trend. No longer restricted to body building, most people now incorporate some form of weight training to improve or maintain muscle strength.

3. Body-weight training ? Body-weight exercises use minimal equipment and include push-ups, pull-ups, planks, and squats.

4. Children and obesity ? Exercise programs aimed at the problem of childhood obesity are also a major fitness trend. Schools are increasingly partnering with commercial and community-based physical activity programs to prevent and treat rising childhood obesity rates.

5. Exercise and weight loss ? Consistently in the top 20 fitness trends, researchers say most popular diet plans incorporate exercise to encourage weight loss.

6. Fitness programs for older adults ? Fitness clubs are capitalizing on an aging baby boomer generation with age-appropriate exercise programs.

7. Personal training ? As more personal trainers are becoming certified, they are becoming more accessible in a variety of settings, such as corporate wellness, community-based, and medical fitness programs.

8. Functional fitness ? Researchers define functional fitness as using strength training to improve balance, coordination, force, power, and endurance to perform activities of daily living. Functional fitness programs are designed to reflect actual activities done as a function of daily living and are often used in fitness programs for older adults.

9. Core training ? Using equipment like balance balls and wobble boards, core training stresses strength and conditioning of the stabilizing muscles of the mid-section. Researchers say exercising the core muscles in the hips, lower back, and abdomen improves overall stability for daily activities and sports performance.

10. Group personal training ? A boon for budget-conscious clients, personal trainers now often provide services to small groups of two to four people at deep discounts.

The survey was completed by 3,346 health and fitness professionals worldwide and appears in the American College of Sports Medicine?s Health & Fitness Journal.

Commonwealth plan adds new Pennsylvania real estate opportunities

Five properties from the Pennsylvania state inventory will soon be up for sale after recent approval of the 2012 Real Property Disposition Plan. The five pieces of new real estate will add to a plan hoping to save money and generate revenue for the commonwealth by putting these properties onto local tax rolls.

The properties could be a very attractive purchase for both business and casual real estate investors alike. As the biding continues to progress, state officials seem optimistic about the mutually beneficial impact these sales could create for the commonwealth of Pennsylvania as well as the successful bidder.

The sites approved for sale under the Commonwealth plan will include the Embreeville Center, Allentown State Hospital, Weaversville Secure Treatment Facility, Northampton Fort LeBoeuf Museum, and a parcel on the DGS Annex that formerly was Harrisburg State Hospital. Moving forward, the state will soon be conducting land and environmental appraisals in preparation to bring these properties to the market by the spring.

Each real estate investment comes with its own unique set of circumstances. Purchasing the property is just the beginning. It is important to understand what you are getting into before taking interest to the next level.

Many setbacks may occur whiling taking a real estate project from start to finish. Property leasing, purchase and sales agreements, as well as land use and zoning restrictions, are a few of the handful of problems that may surface in a real estate investment. Those looking to purchase and develop real estate may benefit from the hands-on knowledge and experience legal help can provide.

If you'll remember back to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy SIII (S3), Samsung indicated that the device would be compatible with inductive charging backs and chargers. Well that never really happened, and now an ebay seller is taking things into his own hands and offering wireless charging backs compatible with Palm Touchstone chargers.

The back plates -- which are priced at $24 for the cover or $55 bundled with a charging station and a cable -- are in a very limited run of just a few dozen units. This is understandable considering that they're being made by hand, but hopefully they'll continue to make them to meet demand.

Google announces Nexus 10 tablet with 2,560 x 1,500, 300 ppi display and Android 42, shipping November 13th for $399

Weather? What weather? Google has announced the Nexus 10, a Samsung-made 10.05-inch tablet that appears to share a lot of DNA with the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. Android chief Andy Rubin revealed that the device will be packing a 2,560 x 1,600 display, promising a pixel density of 300 ppi. Google has also indicated that the Nexus 10 will crank out nine hours of continuous video playback and 500 hours of standby on its 9,000mAh lithium polymer battery. Of course, no new tablet would be complete without a new operating system, and while we'll still be calling it Jelly Bean, it's now been bumped all the way up to Android 4.2.

The official specifications match those that were leaked late last week, and inside the device is a dual-core, Cortex A15-based 1.7 GHz Samsung Exynos 5250 CPU. In addition, there's a Mali T604 GPU, stereo speakers, 2GB of RAM, NFC, 802.11 b/g/n (MIMO + HT40) WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, with front-and rear NFC (Android beam) radios. 'Round back you'll find a 5-megapixel main camera and a 1.9-megapixel forward-facing shooter. Weighing 603 grams, it's 8.9mm thick and offers microUSB, Pogo Pin, microHDMI and the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. It'll be available from November 13th on Google Play in the US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Canada and Japan -- with the 16GB edition costing $399 (£319 in the UK) and the 32GB version setting you back $499 (£389).

Mandatory flu vaccine for health care workers to protect patients

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? All health care workers in health care institutions should be vaccinated with the annual influenza vaccine to protect patients, argues an editorial in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

"Each season, 20% of health care workers get influenza, and 28% of young healthy adults who get it have asymptomatic or subclinical infections," writes Dr. Ken Flegel, Senior Associate Editor, CMAJ. "Some of them may shed virus up to a day before symptoms appear. It is time that all people who work in a health care institution be vaccinated."

In Canada, there are approximately 20 000 hospital admissions related to influenza and an estimated 4000 to 8000 deaths attributed to the illness. However, 55%󈞭% of physicians do not get vaccinated against the flu and are putting patients at risk of illness and death.

Dr. Flegel argues that flu vaccination for health workers must be compulsory, although there could be exemptions for medical or religious reasons. A vaccination rate above 90% is required to prevent outbreaks in hospitals. Mandatory programs for health care workers in many US institutions have resulted in participation rates of about 95%.

"Our schools have shown us the way. During measles outbreaks, access to schools has been successfully denied to nonvaccinated children and staff. The time has come for health care institutions to demand that all health care workers be vaccinated. Our patients' lives depend on this change," Dr. Flegel concludes.

Dell XPS 10 lets the FCC get under its skin, into its manual

We already got a pretty good look at the Dell XPS 10's outward facade, but if it's internal hardware you're after, you may want to take a look at the FCC's latest: they tore the transforming tablet apart. The federal teardown is garnished with the standard trappings: FCC labels, frequency tests and Dell attestations -- one of which notes the WiFi and Bluetooth radios' shared antenna and its inability to simultaneously transmit both signals. The XPS 10's manual is available for browsing, too, in case you need a refresher on how to pinch, zoom or swipe. Check it for yourself at the FCC, or just pop on down to the attached gallery for a gander at the device's innards.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 Launch - Business Insider

windows phone 8We followed along with the official live feed of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 launch as the company unveiled its new mobile platform.

The key features demonstrated were Rooms, Kids Corner, Data Sense, and SkyDrive integration.

Rooms is a way of group messaging and location sharing with a specific selection of people.

Kids Corner is perfect for parents whose children want to play with their phone and gives them a safe space to do so without access to your email or social networking.

Data Sense is a software feature that compresses web pages to lessen the impact on your data plan. In addition, it offers you a means to track your monthly data usage to help you avoid those nasty overage charges.

And Microsoft's SkyDrive is its cloud solution, making it a snap to access music, movies, and documents no matter which device you're using.

Here we go! Product boss Joe Belfiore is on stage.

He's excited that there are "actual lines of people outside our stores waiting to get our stuff."

Microsoft's app store has grown to 120,000 apps.

Microsoft wants to put "people at the center of the experience."

More talk about how Microsoft wants to reinvent the smartphone experience. Video time!

Lots of focus on the individual. "It's a phone made for?you."

"It's the perfect companion to your Windows PC and Xbox."

New social live tiles. Tapping on a person shows you his latest posts and tweets.

Windows Phone 8 will feature a new lock screen powered by "Live Apps."

It sounds like it'll be live widgets that change based on what you like. New Facebook photos, friends' tweets, and the like.

Belfiore mentions that he has over 700 photos on Facebook, and every time he takes out his phone, the Live App shows him a different one.

Time for a closer look at Skype. It's been integrated into Windows Phone 8.

Skype is always on, ready to receive a call or message all the time.

Belfiore predicts that 46 of the top 50 apps on other platforms will also be on Windows Phone.

Big buildup to a mystery app...

And it's Pandora for Windows Phone 8, available early 2013.

It'll include a year of free music without ads.

Here comes a feature called Data Sense, a way to keep an eye on your data plan and prevent overages.

Data Sense will compress web pages to make them use less data.

Data Sense will bring you "45% more web browsing" without going over your data plan.

Verizon will be first to offer Data Sense, but it's on its way to the rest of the providers.

Belfiore teasing a kid-friendly feature...windows phone 8

It's called "Kids Corner." A place for your kids to watch movies, run apps, and do whatever else you want to let them do without affecting the rest of your phone.

And here come some children to demonstrate it!

Belfiore's daughter just called him "mommy."

They're into it and they're quiet while playing Fruit Ninja.

Here's another video?this time it's a busy mom talking up the features of Kids Corner.

Oh, hello! It's Jessica Alba.

"I don't have to worry about my kids getting into my social networks or emailing my partners."

Alba now plugging her new company? The Honest Company.

"We make household cleaning products, diapers, and wipes."

Alba exits and now we're back to talking about the personal features of the phone.

Introducing a new feature called Rooms, a way to connect with a specific group of people.

Use it to send messages and share locations.

Rooms will be cross-platform. Other phone users can get part of the Rooms experience.

Now we're talking about the phone, the PC, and the Xbox. The Microsoft ecosystem.

Skydrive, Microsoft's cloud solution, is built into Windows 8 and is readily available on Xbox.

"Think of your phone, tablet, and PC together as a virtual office."

Now we're talking about the camera.

Integrated sharing lets you blast out photos via Facebook, Twitter, email, or SkyDrive.

SkyDrive lets you instantly backup your photos to your computer.

SkyDrive starts you off with 7 GB for free. "The most free space out of anyone."

Moving on to music?your music collection will be available across devices.

The same is true with playlists?create one on your PC, it appears on your phone ia SkyDrive.

"No other phone works this nicely across your PC and home entertainment system."

Ballmer is in the building!

Seems to be taking a sharp dig at Apple: "When we set out to reinvent the smartphone, we didn't want to build a phone for all of us. We wanted to build a personal phone for each of us."

Ballmer is touting the unified Microsoft ecosystem as well?PC, tablet, phone, and Xbox.

Ballmer demoing some Windows Phone 8 phones now.

Complimenting the Nokia 920 on its camera and wireless charging abilities.

Samsung's ATIV S has a huge screen and a long-lasting battery.

He seems pretty partial to HTC's Windows Phone 8 X. "It's remarkable."

Exclusive to Verizon will be the Samsung ATIV Oddyssey.

The 65 Microsoft Stores around the country will carry every single phone in every color option.

Ballmer mentioning that developers, hardware manufacturers, and service providers are "all in."

"Windows Phone is the best phone for Windows."

Jessica Alba and Joe Belfiore are back out on stage.

"You wouldn't mistake one of us for the other, but now you'd never mistake our phones for each other's phones."
