9-year-old Anastacia Marquez communicates more precisely and efficiently now, thanks to a specialized application on a school iPad called Proloquo2Go.

Anastacia Marquez, a 9-year-old student at Sunrise Elementary School in Las Cruces, N.M., pauses for a beat, pondering the question from one of her teachers, Melissa Flavell.

It?s a simple exchange between student and teacher?one that was more difficult a few months ago.

Marquez has lived with multiple brain tumors since she was less than a year old. Those tumors?there are now five?and the seven neurosurgeries she has endured silenced her speech. Through a combination of mouthing and whispering, Marquez can identify many letters of the alphabet, and their corresponding sounds. But her ability to communicate verbally is significantly limited.

?When she?s happy, we know she?s happy,? said Sunrise principal Brian Peterson, who said Marquez beams at music class. ?But the poor squirt isn?t always happy ? She?s been through a lot, and we don?t always know how to help.?

Thanks to Peterson?s love of gadgets, dedicated work by Sunrise staff members, and a popular piece of technology, that?s starting to change.

Marquez communicates more precisely and efficiently now, thanks to a specialized application on a school iPad called Proloquo2Go. Teachers can ask Marquez direct questions, and she answers by pressing an icon on the iPad?s touch screen.

The device is the property of Sunrise Elementary, but Marquez carries it home so she can take advantage of the enhanced communication ability it provides.

Maria Marquez, 10, is one of Anastacia?s three sisters. She also attends Sunrise Elementary. Maria said Anastacia used to communicate primarily with nods?or by patting her head when it ached.

Laura Prudom: 'American Idol' Recap: Top 24 Partially Revealed

Another week, another wholly unnecessary, post-audition audition episode of "American Idol," because the judges are apparently unqualified to accurately measure talent until they've heard a contestant sing at least eight times in four different venues. Everything that was revealed in this episode could've been covered in a five minute montage, but the producers have a two-hour timeslot and they're determined to make you sit through every monotonous minute, gosh darn it!

Since I am not nearly as sadistic as the creators of "American Idol," all you really need to know is included in the handy list of survivors and lucky escapees below. I suggest you save your DVR space and just drop in for the last five minutes of the Feb. 23 episode, when the show will roll out its annual "Ridiculous Dancing Montage" that will remind you of the Top 24 in one manageable, filler-free chunk.

The first 14 contestants to make it to the live rounds were:

• Jen Hirsch -- The winery worker we first met in Galveston, who was one of many to wow the crowd with a bluesy rendition of "Georgia on My Mind" in Hollywood.
• Creighton Fraker -- Jen's fellow group member, the "starving artist" from New York. His quirky tone won't be everyone's cup of tea, but he's certainly been a standout of the audition rounds.
• Joshua Ledet -- A soulful crooner who was basically a non-entity during the initial auditions, but quickly differentiated himself from the masses during Hollywood Week.
• Haley Johnson -- This peppy blonde is one of many with a strong voice, but not really enough personality to separate her from the crowd this season. Great belter, though.
• Elise Testone -- She nailed "It's A Man's World" for her final performance, and her husky tone and sweet runs should help her progress to the Top 12.
• Reed Grimm -- Though he's not a member of the Fantastic Four, he's certainly pulled off several super performances; especially his a cappella-turned-drum performance of "Georgia."
• Erika Van Pelt -- One of the strongest female voices in the competition, with a tone eerily reminiscent of Pink, the mobile DJ was an easy yes -- though the judges did say that she didn't do as well as they'd hoped throughout Hollywood and Vegas.
• Chelsea Sorrell -- The first of several indistinguishable country crooners; from what I recall, Chelsea was a solid enough singer, but likely to be canon fodder in the live rounds since she hasn't been all that memorable thus far.
• Baylie Brown -- Another country girl, with the added cachet of having had far more screen-time than Chelsea, due to the fact that she first auditioned back in Season 6, which is apparently super impressive. She mangled Rascal Flatts' "Here Comes Goodbye" in her final audition, but in spite of that, the judges gave her a pass.
• Heejun Han -- Best known for his deadpan zingers and rivalry with Richie "The Cowboy" Law (who was thankfully sent home), long-suffering Heejun has always been one of J.Lo's favorites and acquitted himself beautifully in his final song. His hilarious response to Ryan Seacrest's "What are you sweating?" ("Mostly water") was possibly the high point of the episode. Yes, it was one of those nights.
• Jessica Sanchez -- I don't remember this sweet 16-year-old at all, but her final performance of "The Prayer" was beautifully controlled and had a sweet, natural purity that literally gave me chills. She wants to succeed so that she can support her family since they're broke from supporting her musical ambitions. No pressure.
• Phillip Phillips -- This season's Casey Abrams, which is only a good thing if you liked last season's Casey Abrams. He's graveled and seems to have a great grasp of who he wants to be as an artist, but I predict he'll be even more divisive than Creighton.
• Colton Dixon -- The reluctant brother who hijacked his sister's audition after the judges bullied him into performing. He's still far too affected for me, but he's unique and confident. Plus, he's white, male and can play and instrument, so he'll probably win. He tried to make up for stealing his sister's thunder by dedicating his final song to her, but things got awkward again when she told him to ask the judges to put her through next year. Yeah, that sibling rivalry isn't going away any time soon.


• Brielle Von Hugel -- Teen diva with a suffocating stage mom. She performed a mid-tempo version of "Killing Me Softly" for her final audition, which was interesting. I think she thinks she's better than she actually is, not sure she'll make the Top 12.

And, in an attempt to fabricate drama from a completely pedestrian episode, the show ended on a "cliffhanger" with proud daddy Adam Brock left in limbo until the next episode -- though I can't fathom him being sent home, especially after his rousing performance of "Georgia" in Hollywood.

We mostly lost a few faceless nobodies who hadn't been given any exposure during the audition rounds, and I didn't even catch their names, but there were a couple of surprises. The consistently fantastic Lauren Gray was eliminated, despite her commercial-skewing, Kelly Clarkson-meets-Adele sound. She had great range and a lot of personality, so I wouldn't be surprised if she was brought back as a wildcard (or are we not doing that this year?) but it's somewhat baffling that she was let go in the first place. And despite the catchy name, Neco Starr was also sent home, which made more sense since his last performance sounded nasal and whiny.

On Feb. 23, the 10 remaining members of the Top 24 will be revealed, and thankfully, next week, we can finally get on with the actual singing competition. Were you surprised by any of the judges' decisions?

"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox. Next week, "Idol" will also air on Tuesday (2/28) at 8 p.m. as the semifinalist boys perform.

3rd World Liberation tyrant; Hugo Chavez?s plans for re-election has been thrown into chaos. Chavez has announced that he has a new cancerous legion. This has huge implications for his electoral prospects.

President Hugo Chavez?s revelation that his cancer may have returned has plunged Venezuelainto a period of deep uncertainty as it ramps up for what many expect to be the most closely contested presidential elections in years.

Less than 24 hours after Chavez disclosed that doctors have found a new lesion that is likely cancerous in the same area where a malignant tumor was removed last year, what-next scenarios have begun to proliferate in the local media and among analysts.

Chavez could still tap a successor to run in his place, the October 27 elections could be delayed, or he could just muddle through with a campaign message that shifts attention from the state of his health to the legacy of his Bolivarian revolution.

But underlying the speculation are deeper fears of the unpredictable consequences of a vacuum of power in a country that has been dominated by Chavez, 57, since he came to power in 1999.

I don?t wish cancer on no one, but I have little sympathy for Hugo Chavez. This is karma for the destruction his regime has done to Venezuela.

Busy-Dad-E: Fatherhood Uncensored: Moments of Parental Zen

Let's face it ... parenthood is great fun, but it's also pretty darn trying and exhausting all the time at times.

At least at our house, there's a never-ending train of laundry to do and fold, dishes to wash, dry, and put away, lunches to pack, diapers to haul out to the dumpster, pee stains to clean around the toilets (what else would you suspect from 3 small boys with prototypical "aim"), etc.

And that's just the fun that begins AFTER the boys go to bed. Let's not get started with all of the table 'dancing', knife juggling, ceiling fan-swinging fun while they're awake aka one never ending MMA match.

(Note to self: Create a "Sleep Bank" by which you can deposit extra sleep from your teenage years for withdrawal when you become parents.)

But I digress (and jest, though not about the Sleep Bank).

When you're a parent with multiple small children, you measure quiet dinners at home in seconds, not in whole yes/no numbers.

And when it happens, it makes a massive deposit into the "Good Dinner Behavior Bank" that helps get you through the next seemingly never-ending trail of dinner chaos.

The other night we had just such a dinner. In actuality, it may have lasted only 600 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. Everyone reverently said the prayer beforehand, no one rushed off to go potty, stand up and dance around, or run upstairs to get a favorite toy. No one threw anything. There were no scowls and no tattles. Questions about everyone's day were asked.

In short, I think Mom-E and I were so shocked we almost forgot what to say or do!

(Of course, something happened at the very end, something trivial I can't remember at present, which lead to a major screaming blow-up. But for about 10 minutes, it was total Zen.)

And the truth is, and I think most parents would agree, that parenting is about these brief moments of Zen. These are the things that keep us going through all of the tantrums, tattles, and frustration.

And personally I find it helpful to recall them, as evidence that things are better than they may seem when things aren't going so well.

In no particular order, these recently include:
-Seeing Star Wars in 3D in the theater with Big Brother.
-Playing board games with Big Brother before school when everyone else is asleep.
-When Little Brother asks me, "Dad-E, how was your day?"
-When Bab-E Brother says, "Mommy coot lake-y" ("Mom-E cute lady").
-Everyone in the family chasing each other in a game of tag in the back yard.
-When the boys share amongst each other without being asked.
-When the boys hug each other spontaneously.
-Playing piano with Big Brother.
-Games of hide-and-seek in the house after dinner, interspersed with dancing/chasing to iPod music.
-That the boys always "hide" from me when I get home from work. (Does it still count if Bab-E Brother screams out, "Dad-E, we're hiding!" from his hiding place?)

US official: Iran still not ready for nuclear advance

US sites hacked as objections grow to piracy deal

LONDON?? Opponents of a controversial global copyright treaty counted three victories Friday as American government websites were hacked and the Eastern European nations of Poland and Slovenia distanced themselves from the deal.

His announcement came after Slovenia's government also said Friday that it is halting the ratification of ACTA.

"This agreement is obviously not a matter of understanding, but of major misunderstanding," Slovenian Education Minister Radovan Zerjav said.

The developments are bad news for industrialized countries such as the United States, which have pushed ACTA as a way of defending the entertainment industry and luxury goods manufacturers from pirates and counterfeiters. American officials spent years negotiating ACTA in an effort to harmonize intellectual property protection across different countries.

The goal is to help countries fight everything from fake pharmaceuticals to pirated music, but grass-roots activists ? many of them in Eastern Europe ? have been waging weeks of protests against what they see as moves intended to clamp down on free expression and Internet privacy.

So far around 20 countries have signed up to the deal, a key step before ratification. Four EU countries have now backed away from it ? Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic ? and its approval at the European Union level appears increasingly uncertain.

Tusk also said Friday that he sent a letter to the European People's Party, a center-right group in the European Parliament to which his Civic Platform belongs, urging it not to back ACTA in its current form.

Back in the United States, the Trade Commission confirmed that the sites had been compromised, saying in an email that they had been taken down and wouldn't be brought back "until we're satisfied that any vulnerability has been addressed."

Anonymous boasted of stealing a large amount of personal data from Trade Commission employees ? including everything from banking statements to dating website information.

The Trade Commission said that while it was still investigating the hack, "the nature of the site limits information that could have been accessed."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum released four years of federal income tax returns on Wednesday night, showing a sharp rise in his personal wealth spurred by his growing work as Washington-based corporate consultant and media commentator.

Santorum's returns show that his federal income taxes rose from 2007, when he paid $167,000, to $310,000 in 2009, then dropped to $263,000 in 2010. During that same period, his annual income surged from nearly $660,000 in 2007 to $1.1 million in 2009 before slipping to $923,000 in 2010.

Santorum, 53, has sold himself in the Republican primaries as both a Washington outsider and a social conservative, stressing his family's coal-mining background and his appeal to religious and working-class voters. His personal finances tell a different story, detailing the trajectory of a politician who grew more prosperous in the Senate and became a millionaire afterwards, at times capitalizing on his Beltway connections.

His 2010 tax returns show he made more than $550,000 in media and consulting fees ? paid to him through a corporation he set up, Excelsior LLC. The previous year, Santorum made more than $820,000 in fees, also paid through the same firm.

Santorum's wealth doesn't come close to the multimillion-dollar fortune amassed by Mitt Romney's high-finance prowess or Newt Gingrich's smaller but still-lucrative blend of foundation and consulting work. Rising to GOP leadership in the Senate as Republican Conference chairman, Santorum pushed to expand the influence of Republican-leaning business interests. As conference chairman, he headed GOP Senate communications efforts and met regularly with GOP-leaning business and lobbying figures. He raised more than $550,000 from lobbyists during his unsuccessful 2006 Senate re-election campaign.

After his Senate defeat, Santorum did not register as a lobbyist, but he aided corporate and other interests as a consultant. He was paid $142,500 by Consol Energy, a Pennsylvania-based energy firm with numerous Appalachian coal mines. The firm has lobbied against Obama administration efforts to tighten limits on greenhouse gas emissions.

Santorum also was paid $65,000 by the American Continental Group, a D.C. lobbying firm with an assortment of corporate clients, and $125,000 by the Clapham Group, a Virginia firm that aids religious rights organizations. He benefitted from media work, paid $230,000 for appearances on Fox News, as well as more than $80,000 for stints as a radio commentator.
