Caresses enjoyable vicariously, too

Monday, October 17, 2011

It is well-known that we humans enjoy sensual caresses, but the brain reacts just as strongly to seeing another person being caressed, reveals research from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Being gently caressed by another person is both a physical and an emotional experience. But the way we are touched and the reaction this elicits in the brain are a science of their own.

Researchers from the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy have studied how the brain reacts to caresses. Volunteers were given MRI scans to measure blood flows in the brain while being stroked either slowly or quickly with a soft brush.

Same reaction via video

Not unexpectedly, the brain reacted most strongly to the slow strokes. More surprising results emerged when the volunteers instead watched videos of another person being caressed.

"The aim was to understand how the brain processes information from sensual contact, and it turned out that the brain was activated just as quickly when the volunteers got to watch someone else being caressed as when they were being caressed themselves," says India Morrison, one of the researchers behind the study. "Even when we are only watching sensual skin contact, we can experience its emotional meaning without actually feeling the touch directly."

As a comparison, the volunteers also got to watch a video where a hand caresses an inanimate object, and in this case the brain was not activated anywhere near as strongly.

So what do these results mean?

"They indicate that our brain is wired in such a way that we can feel and process other people's sensations, which could open up new ways of studying how we create empathy," says Morrison. "It's important for us as people to understand the significance of different types of touch ? to know whether two people are in a relationship or are about to start a fight."

The study has been published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Jobs the CEO, Jobs the technologist and futurist, Jobs the inventor and innovator and refiner of others' ideas: All of them, in the end, relied upon another Steve Jobs who sewed the others together and bottled their lightning: Steve Jobs the storyteller, spinning the tale of our age and of his own success, and making it happen as he went. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

(AP) ? In dark suit and bowtie, he is a computing-era carnival barker ? eyebrows bouncing, hands gesturing, smile seductive and coy and a bit annoying. It's as if he's on his first date with an entire generation of consumers. And, in a way, he is.

It is Jan. 24, 1984, and a young Steve Jobs is standing at center stage, introducing to shareholders of Apple Computer Inc. the "insanely great" machine that he's certain will change the world: a beige plastic box called the Macintosh.

Here is the Wizard of Cupertino at the threshold of it all, years before the black mock turtleneck and blue jeans. He is utterly in command ? of his audience and of his performance. All of the Jobs storytelling staples are emerging.

The hyperbole: "You have to see this display to believe it. It's incredible."

The villain: "And all of this power fits in a box that is one-third the size and weight of an IBM PC."

The tease: "Now I'd like to show you Macintosh in person. All of the images you are about to see on the large screen will be generated by what's in that bag."

He retreats into the shadows, pulls the inaugural Mac out of its satchel. He inserts a disk and boots up. Suddenly, on the screen ? roughly pixelated by today's standards but, for 1984, stunning ? a typeface rolls by to the theme from "Chariots of Fire." A picture of a geisha appears. Then a spreadsheet. Architectural renderings. A game of video chess. A bitmapped drawing of Steve Jobs dreaming of a Mac.

The computer speaks. "Hello. I'm Macintosh. It sure is great to get out of that bag," it says. "It is with considerable pride that I introduce a man who's been like a father to me: Steve Jobs."

Applause shakes the place. Steven Paul Jobs, basking in it, tries not to grin. He fails. The future, at this moment, is his.

___

It is 27 years later now, and Steve Jobs has exited the stage he managed so well. We are left with the talismans of his talent, a tech diaspora: the descendants of that original Mac. The iPod and iTunes, Nanos and Shuffles and Classics and Touches. The Apple Store. The iPhone and the App Store and the iPad 2. They are part of the cultural fabric ? tools that make our lives easier and, some insist, sexier and more streamlined.

But taken together, what do they mean? Are they merely gadgets and services that sold well, that answered the market's needs for humans of the late 20th and early 21st centuries? Did Jobs' prickly perfectionism ? born, some said, of outsized ego ? merely create a whole run of really useful tools? Or is something more elemental at play here?

Jobs the CEO, Jobs the technologist and futurist, Jobs the inventor and innovator and refiner of others' ideas: All of them, in the end, relied upon another Steve Jobs who sewed the others together and bottled their lightning: Steve Jobs the storyteller, spinning the tale of our age and of his own success, and making it happen as he went.

From his earliest days with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, he was a half-step ahead of the rest of us, innovating and inventing and creating and doggedly marketing it all by building a lifestyle around it. From Apple's personal computers, he harnessed the new and repackaged the existing to create something fresh, something more.

Beyond his measurable successes, though, Steve Jobs claims one spot in history above all others: He realized what we wanted before we understood it ourselves.

We wanted easy to use. We wanted to lose ourselves in what our gadgets did. We wanted sleek, cool, streamlined ? things that weren't always associated with consumer electronics. We wanted the relationship between object fetish and functionality to be indistinguishable. We wanted to touch the future without seams that would yank us out of our communion with our machines. We wanted, in short, intricate simplicity.

To Jobs, the above sentences might have been commandments. They were used to denounce ? in a friendly manner, but always pointed ? what Apple cast as the corporate, bland chaos of the PC culture that IBM and Microsoft were creating.

In Jobs' hands those principles were potent weapons. Apple's successes and missteps are well known, but things seemed to accumulate voltage when they passed through the switching station of Jobs' brain.

"There are two sides of it. One is the interface design side. The other is his ability to persuade major media outlets and others to work with him," says Edward Tenner, a technology historian and author of "Our Own Devices: How Technology Remakes Humanity."

"His personal mystique," Tenner says, "became a self-fulfilling prophecy."

Some of it is the American penchant for big personalities. Microsoft had Bill Gates, Facebook Marc Zuckerberg. A dominant human face focuses things. Think of IBM, one of the 20th century's most influential companies: It dominated as the computer age dawned but lacked a defining figure; does it hold the same place in popular culture as an Apple or a Facebook? The Hollywood storytelling tradition, built on the American cult of individual achievement, feeds the belief in a national history of invention and innovation.

Progress by committee? Not so compelling a script, even though Apple succeeds on the hard work of thousands. But the American inventor mystique ? the notion that one guy armed with a combination of a good idea, hard work, challenging conditions and a bit of snake oil, can still change the world? That's been a big seller since Eli Whitney and the cotton gin.

When it comes to Jobs, comparisons are legion. Like Edison? A little, but not really; Edison didn't understand the elegance of interfaces. Like Barnum, selling the sizzle? Except that Jobs had the steak, too. Perhaps more like broadcast pioneers David Sarnoff and Bill Paley, who realized they must harness the pipeline ? the airwaves, in their case ? so that the content could flow through.

In a world of corporations and committees and consultation and collaboration, Jobs personified the power of the individual to effect an outcome ? or at least the appearance of it. He was nothing if not cinematic. He projected his own image onto giant screens behind him as he rolled out product after product like some microchip Merlin. He was not merely a technologist; he was a stylemaker.

Jobs "saw there was this personal quality to computing," says Paul Levinson, author of "Cellphone: The Story of the World's Most Mobile Medium and How It Has Transformed Everything."

"The attractiveness of the product . They're gleaming, beautiful objects that are physically attractive," Levinson says. "iPods are almost worn as jewelry. Who would have imagined it would have been cool to see wires coming out of somebody's ear?"

___

Every medium, of course, needs messages. Every container needs content. Every gadget, to endure, needs to transcend itself and become what the people who use it dream it could be.

Imagine, in the Foghat and Starland Vocal Band days of 1976 when Apple came into existence, if someone said you could acquire all the music you could listen to in a lifetime, from the best bands, in a matter of moments ? and not by ordering 10 eight-track tapes for a penny from Columbia House. Unthinkable.

Imagine if, on the day Jobs introduced the Mac, someone said: Hey, wanna watch "Risky Business" on this screen that looks like a thick piece of paper? And we can read magazines and newspapers AND play Missile Command while we're waiting for it to ? what's the word? ? "download." Preposterous.

Sure, we had downloaded music and even movies before iTunes; yes, we had been digital when it came to reading before the App Store. But again Apple stood in the intersection of utility and desire. Those services helped free content from physical format and let it go where people were.

When Jobs introduced the iPhone in 2007, his sexy-beast patter made a great point of identifying the three fundamental gadgets that people sought out: the music player, the cellphone and the Internet-access device. The iPhone, he made great hay of saying, was all three.

Apple didn't just want to make money from things it made; it wanted to make money from things others made ? to be a distributor of content through its devices. So if you want The New York Times on your iPad, Apple gets a cut. If you want premium Weather Channel maps, Apple gets a cut. If you want the Beatles or "Harry Potter" and you get 'em on iTunes, Apple gets a cut.

Put another way: Jobs built a tech company, then left. When he came back, the landscape had changed enough that he decided, hey? this should be a media company, too. The Internet era had arrived and the two notions had grown together. And there Steve Jobs stood in the middle, getting it ? and controlling the conditions of distribution to benefit Apple, much to content companies' irritation.

"Asking if something is a media company or a tech company is now irrelevant. Media is technology. Technology is media," says Dale Peskin, a principal at We Media, a Virginia firm that studies how media, technology and society are changing each other.

"The distinction," he says, "has become nonsensical."

___

In one episode of "Mad Men," the ad-exec main character, Don Draper, builds a campaign around Kodak's slide projector, which the company calls the "photo wheel." Draper understands that what resonates is not what the gadget does; it's what it means that's important.

"There's the rare occasion," he says, "when the public can be engaged beyond flash ? if they have a sentimental bond with the product." And lo: Draper rechristens the photo wheel the Carousel ? because, he says, "it lets us travel the way a child travels ? round and round and back home again, to a place where we know we are loved."

What Don Draper did with the slide projector in fiction, Steve Jobs did with technology in the real world. He constructed meaning from desire.

"What are we, anyway? Most of what we think we are is just a collection of likes and dislikes, habits, patterns. At the core of what we are is our values, and what decisions and actions we make reflect those values," Jobs said in a Playboy interview in 1985.

For Jobs, it was about harnessing the here and now with devices that propelled you into the future ? the one "Star Trek" and "The Jetsons" promised, where gadgetry lived alongside us without devaluing humans in the process.

As eulogies pour in, it's easy to conclude that Apple was Steve Jobs and Steve Jobs was Apple. The reality is far more complex. Teams upon teams of creative people built the company's dreams and hid its seams.

But on the inside, dictatorship, however benevolent, tends to be more efficient than democracy. And looking from the outside, the charismatic front man trumps communal, incremental progress. Genius may indeed be 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration, but selling genius to the masses ? well, that ratio is probably far more balanced.

There is criticism that Jobs was an amplifier, a conduit of others' originality. But he understood how to turn raw ideas into applied, coveted tech. "People always knock him for building off other people. But he knew what to do with it," says Leander Kahney, editor and publisher of the tech blog Cult of Mac.

He made people believe his reality was the one they desired. He convinced us of what we couldn't live without, then packaged it and sold it to us. With a sales sensibility drawn from the 19th century, he sold us the 21st. Which did he do more of ? nuts and bolts or smoke and mirrors? Does it matter? Aren't both necessary for what he and Apple accomplished?

In the end, these things are true: a beige plastic cube with a gray screen and a slot in it changed computing. A tiny box that stored bits and bytes, helped along by a virtual store that sold digital files for 99 cents each, changed music. Another tiny one-button box that did hundreds of things changed phones and media. And a flat, paper-sized slate, a latter day tabula rasa, is still changing all of the above in ways we haven't yet measured.

David Gelernter offers insight into the Jobsian personality in "Machine Beauty: Elegance and the Heart of Technology," his 1998 book. "We believe implicitly that the scientist is one type, the artist a radically different one," Gelernter writes. "In fact, the scientific and artistic personalities overlap more than they differ, and the higher we shimmy into the leafy canopy of talent, the closer the two enterprises seem."

On a recent lunch hour in Cupertino, de Anza Boulevard, which runs right through the campus of Apple headquarters, is full of pedestrians ? the acolytes of Jobs. Stop at a red light and watch as they cross. Invariably, each one carries a device. A woman is engrossed in what's on her iPad. A young man is chatting on an iPhone. Three people wear earbuds with white cords snaking into various pockets. One is singing.

Here's the funny thing. Three days later and 3,000 miles east, an urban crosswalk produces the same sight ? human beings interacting with the fruits of the Apple tree, doing what they do with Jobs' vision of progress, integrating his gadgets and their contents into everyday life.

Was he inventor? Salesman? Entertainer? Visionary? Those questions miss the point. Like his devices, Steve Jobs was a medium that led us to other destinations ? the ones of our own choosing. That's what made him different. He's gone, but the future he saw is still, quite literally, in our hands.

iPhone 4S pre-orders now open ? which carrier should you pick? (Appolicious)

At about 3 a.m. this morning, Apple started accepting pre-orders for the next iteration of its iconic smartphone, the iPhone 4S. But for the first time ever, iPhone buyers have three choices of carrier.

That?s a pretty big deal considering that up until a few months ago, customers were stuck with AT&T, whether they liked it or not. Apple released an iPhone with a CDMA antenna earlier this year that allowed customers to choose Verizon rather than AT&T, but with the announcement of the iPhone 4S, Apple added Sprint to its list of carriers. This is the first product launch that has allowed users to pick from more than one carrier for the same device.

Choice is great, but it leaves a big question: how to choose? Each service has its pros and cons, and Mashable has put together a pretty solid comparison of all three carriers and their benefits to iPhone owners. We?re going to hit a few of the highlights so you can make a better-informed decision before you log your pre-order and sign-up for the next two years with your iPhone 4S.

Simultaneous talking and browsing ? only with AT&T

First off, the biggest discrepancy between the three carriers is one of network capability. Sprint and Verizon both use a CDMA network, which is slightly different from Apple?s GSM network. Simplified, the difference is this: CDMA transmits data and voice on the same frequency, while GSM separates the two. That means that on AT&T?s network, you can be on a call with a friend and decide to go see a movie, then, while staying on the call, pull open the Safari web browser, find show times, and relay them to your friend with no interruption. You can surf the web or use 3G data while talking on AT&T; you can?t do that with Sprint or Verizon.

While it sounds like a deal-breaker, however, web browsing while chatting really isn?t as big a deal as it might seem. For most people, situations in which the need to check something on the Internet occurs at the same time as talking are kind of rare, and 3G is a little slow regardless of network anyway. So if you feel you can live without the function, you probably won?t miss it.

On networks: AT&T is fastest, Verizon most reliable

Speaking of network speeds, AT&T?s is also the fastest. According to a test by?PCWorld did of all three networks last year, AT&T clocked in at speeds of 1,410 kilobytes per second on average, while Verizon reached an average of 870 kbps and Sprint an average of 790 kbps.

AT&T does have some drawbacks, however. While the carrier had an exclusive deal for the iPhone with AT&T, many iPhone owners, well, hated it. AT&T is also well-known for network troubles (mostly because of the glut of iPhones) and dropped calls, which is part of the justification it has used in its attempt to acquire T-Mobile (though documents suggest it would be cheaper for AT&T just to invest in fixing up its infrastructure). Meanwhile, Verizon and Sprint, according to a PCWorld survey, rate high in customer satisfaction ? 94 percent and 92 percent, respectively. Sprint also has the largest 3G network in the country.

Sprint wins in price

Finally, we come to price. This is where Sprint excels. Its base voice plan will run you slightly more than the other two carriers ? $69.99 for 450 minutes per month, or $99.99 for unlimited minutes. At AT&T and Verizon, the choices are $59.99 for 450 or $89.99 for unlimited.

Sprint?s data plan, on the other hand, is much cheaper, and it?s the only carrier to offer unlimited 3G data, all at a price of $10 per month. Meanwhile, neither AT&T nor Verizon will offer unlimited data, and they?ll both charge substantially more: $55 for 5GB of data per month at AT&T, $50 for the same with Verizon. However, if you opt to turn your iPhone 4S into a mobile hotspot and allow other devices to use it for Internet access, you?ll need to pony-up an additional $29.99 per month. The mobile hotspot access is included in the 5GB plans for the other two carriers. But at lower tiers, Sprint comes out to be a winner, saving you about $10 a month in many cases and stacking up to better than $200 over the course of a two-year contract ? which is the same as the subsidized price of the iPhone 4S? 16GB version.

Obviously, which carrier you go with depends on personal preferences, brand loyalty, and how you intend to use your new iPhone. Each carrier has advantages, and if it?s possible, testing each of their networks where you intend to use your phone can save you a lot of headache further down the line.

Mercury?s magnetic mysteries: MESSENGER results after six months in orbit

ScienceDaily (Oct. 5, 2011) ? Scientists will highlight the latest results on Mercury from MESSENGER observations obtained during the first six months (the first Mercury solar day) in orbit. These findings will be presented October 5 in 30 papers and posters as part of a special session of the joint meeting of the European Planetary Science Congress and the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society in Nantes, Frances.

Scientists will also look ahead to MESSENGER observations still to come and to the dual-spacecraft BepiColombo mission of the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's later this decade.

"This is the first major scientific meeting at which MESSENGER orbital observations are being presented to the scientific community," says MESSENGER Principal Investigator Sean Solomon of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. "As the first spacecraft to orbit our solar system's innermost planet, MESSENGER continues to reveal new surprises every week. It is timely to sum up what we've learned so far and to seek feedback from our international colleagues across planetary science on our interpretations to date."

After three successful flybys of Mercury, the MESSENGER spacecraft entered orbit about the innermost planet on March 18, 2011. The orbital phase of the mission is enabling the first global perspective on the planet's geology, surface composition, topography, gravity and magnetic fields, exosphere, magnetosphere, and solar-wind interaction.

Mercury's Global Magnetic Field

The magnetic and gravity fields of Mercury are the primary clues scientists have on the structure deep in the interior of the planet, which in turns helps develop general theories for how planets form and evolve. Orbital data reveal that Mercury's magnetic field is offset far to the north of the planet's center, by nearly 20% of Mercury's radius. Relative to the planet's size, this offset is much more than in any other planet, and accounting for it will pose a challenge to theoretical explanations of the field.

"Although we don't know how to explain that yet -- it is no doubt an important clue to the workings of Mercury's dynamo," says Brian Anderson, MESSENGER Deputy Project Scientist and a space physicist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md.

This finding has several implications for other aspects of Mercury, says Anderson, who co-authored several of the presentations in the MESSENGER session. "This means that the magnetic field in the southern hemisphere should be a lot weaker than it is in the north. At the north geographic pole, the magnetic field should be about 3.5 times stronger than it is at the south geographic pole.

"The big difference in northern and southern surface field strengths means that energetic particles, solar wind, and high-energy electrons will preferentially impact the surface in the south, and this situation should lead to asymmetries both in sources of atoms, ions, and molecules for Mercury's exosphere and in the discoloration of the surface by charged particle bombardment," he continues. "Both should occur more strongly in the south."

The Dynamics of Mercury's Exosphere

Mercury is surrounded by a tenuous exosphere of gas generated and maintained by the interaction of the space environment with the planet's surface. Measuring the composition and structure of the exosphere provides insight into how the space environment modifies the outermost layers of the planet's surface materials.

MESSENGER's observations during the flybys and orbit show that the current understanding of the nature of Mercury's exosphere is incomplete, says William McClintock, a MESSENGER mission co-investigator and senior scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, University of Colorado, Boulder.

"They show that distinctly different source and loss processes control the populations of the major constituents of sodium, magnesium, and calcium atoms in the exosphere," says McClintock.

Before MESSENGER, the prevailing theory suggested that material was released from the dayside by solar wind and radiation. In this picture, lofted material then was carried to the nightside by solar radiation pressure. MESSENGER measurements show that magnesium and calcium in the tail region are substantially more abundant than would be expected if they were produced in this way, he points out.

New magnetic field models, derived from MESSENGER's Magnetometer data, indicate that the planet's intrinsic field can couple with the interplanetary field to direct solar wind ions to the nightside, sputtering material from non-illuminated surfaces. But that source is too weak to explain the observed concentrations. Calcium also exhibits an unexplained enhanced concentration at the equator near dawn, a pattern that appears to be a persistent feature in the exosphere. Such dawn enhancements are not observed for magnesium, which is chemically similar to calcium.

The Evolution of Mercury's Geological and Surface Composition

After its first Mercury solar day in orbit, MESSENGER has nearly completed two of its primary global imaging campaigns: a monochrome map at 250 meters per pixel and an eight-color, 1 kilometer per pixel color map. Apart from small gaps, which will be filled in during the next solar day, these maps cover the entire planet under uniform lighting conditions ideal for assessing the form of Mercury's surface features as well as the color and compositional variations across the planet.

Flybys of Mercury by the MESSENGER and Mariner 10 spacecraft showed broad expanses of plains across the planet. There was strong evidence for a volcanic origin of many of these plains, indicating that volcanism played an important role in shaping Mercury's crust; but large regions of the planet remained unmapped, and the origin of many plains units had until now remained ambiguous.

"With images from MESSENGER's orbital mapping campaigns, as well as targeted high-resolution images, we can now begin to assess the origin of plains on a global basis, and -- when combined with data from MESSENGER's X-Ray Spectrometer -- their compositional variation," says Brett Denevi, a planetary scientist in APL's Space Department. "We find that volcanic rocks dominate much of Mercury's crust, even in regions that are geologically complex and where impact cratering has destroyed many of the original surface features."

The X-Ray Spectrometer collects compositional information averaged over relatively large regions on Mercury's surface, and signals diagnostic of the heavier elements are received only during times of high solar activity. For regions where geologic mapping and detailed compositional information are both available, many of the large-scale volcanic units on Mercury are seen to be basaltic. Basalts are common volcanic rocks on Earth and the Moon.

Variations in Surface Reflectance Spectra

Over the course of the first solar day in orbit, the Visible and Infrared Spectrograph (VIRS) channel of the Mercury Atmospheric and Surface Composition Spectrometer (MASCS) obtained over one million spectra of the surface from near one pole to the other and spanning all longitudes. VIRS observed all the major geologic units and structures, from large basins to small fresh-looking craters, and from average pains to hollows and possible pyroclastic materials. Whereas the Mercury Dual Imaging System highlights the morphology and broad color characteristics of these materials, VIRS reveals greater details of the reflective properties of surface materials.

"One surprise that's been with us since the flybys is the apparent lack of iron in the silicate minerals of the rocks on the surface of the planet," says APL's Noam Izenberg, Instrument Scientist for the MASCS instrument on MESSENGER.

"In rock-forming silicates, the primary materials of most planetary crusts, iron shows up as a characteristic absorption at infrared wavelengths, but such features have been completely absent in spectra from Mercury," says Izenberg. The infrared continues to show very little spectral variation indicative of distinct mineralogies, and we are working hard to tease out what we can."

An important chapter of the story, however, appears to be at ultraviolet wavelengths, he says. "Iron in rocks also has effects in this region of the spectrum as well, but those effects are less well studied and understood. However it is here that we see variations among, for example, fresh-looking craters, plains, hollows, pyroclastic deposits, and low-reflectance units."

According to Izenberg, the variations in the ultraviolet may reflect both iron content and the type of rocks that hold it and may provide hints at other materials, such as sulfur, which have characteristic ultraviolet reflectance signatures as well. "Evidence from other instruments on MESSENGER, such as the X-Ray Spectrometer, corroborates low iron abundance near the surface and the presence of sulfur, so as our analyses advance we'll be working to correlate the findings across all instruments."

Looking Ahead

MESSENGER continues to send back data that illuminate Mercury's mysteries. The knowledge gained is already sharpening the mission goals of the dual-spacecraft BepiColombo mission, scheduled to launch to Mercury in 2014.

Members of the MESSENGER team met with BepiColombo scientists at Kyoto University in Japan last month to review the state of knowledge about Mercury and to present initial MESSENGER orbital results.

"We discussed many of the new findings that will be covered in the MESSENGER sessions today," says MESSENGER Project Scientist Ralph McNutt. "BepiColombo team members presented new perspectives on surface mineralogy from recent high-temperature laboratory measurements and new theories for Mercury's formation and for the generation of Mercury's magnetic field. This meeting continued a dialogue, begun more than a decade ago, on the synergies of the two investigations and how ongoing MESSENGER measurements are informing the planning for BepiColombo operations."

Following a year at Vesta, Dawn will depart in July 2012 for Ceres, where it will arrive in 2015. Dawn's mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Ca., for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. in Dulles, Va., designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute are international partners on the mission team.

Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson is currently filming for the show?s Christmas special in India, where he?s apparently being treated like royalty, and he?s managed not to offend anyone? yet.

Ultimate Secrets to Winning Matches | Oval Egg Articles

Let's witness what Abraham has to reveal concerning Ultimate Secrets to Winning Matches. It's only at this time that folks are beginning to understand about Tennis, discussing it on much larger degree. Earlier this topic was not that talked about. Essentially because individuals related with the topic did not do enough. It is highly suggested that you take your time reading through this piece of writing instead of speed reading it, which might lead to several missed points.

This and many additional articles here are written by Abraham David. If you would like to take this write-up please link back to this web page. Article on "Ultimate Secrets to Winning Matches" starts after this.

Article Starts from Here:

The goal is obviously to win when you are playing tennis, after all who really steps out onto the court with the goal of losing a match? If you are like most typical players you need all the help you can get to win some games because you may find yourself up against a player who seems to cream you the split second you serve the ball and has you feeling as if there is no way possible for you to really stand a chance at winning. Yet a few strategies can help you really ensure that you can win, but they all involve paying attention to your opponent so it will require you to watch your opponent and study how they play.

Notice: Please beware that anything said in this composition on "Ultimate Secrets to Winning Matches" should not be taken as opinion from specialist, you should find out specifics from more authentic places as well. Please inquire a specialist of the applicable field. OvalEgg.com is not responsible for any damages of any kind that may arise from applying information contained in this article.

Your first step is obviously going to be serving the ball successfully. If you cannot serve the ball successfully you are going to start out continuously behind and find the entire process rather frustrating. However, if you are able to serve the ball successfully you will be starting off on a very good footing. If you think that your serve is weak then always practice it continuously until you get the power, speed and accuracy for your serve that you want.

Your next step should be learning how to play from the baseline. This is a strategy that is mostly seen in professional tennis but think about it ? if it works for the professionals then it should work for you as well! Ensure that you always hit the ball deep so that you have plenty of time to return to your baseline with each hit, if you are hitting the ball shallow, you are going to be losing precious moments that would give you the upper hand when it is your turn to return the serve.

The next goal that you should have is watching your opponent. Most players tend to have a specific way that they always hit the ball. If you watch and discover what this is, you will be able to start anticipating the movements and actions of your opponent before they even occur. This can be a huge help to you, but it will involve a lot of practice to fine tune this skill. Once you have mastered the skill though, you can expect to see the number of games that you are winning improve.

You also want to ensure that your opponent is hitting as many balls as possible, especially in the beginning. You may be curious about why this matters; after all, if they miss you score a point. Nevertheless, consider if they are managing to hit all of your shots that they are likely running around their end of the court like a mad person. After a little while, this is going to get incredibly tiring. You want your opponent to start getting tired in order to take advantage of them. If they are fully alert and energetic, they are going to be more likely to watch you and how you are playing. If they are tired, they are not going to be as concerned with watching you and instead focus on the ball, or anything else that catches their eye.

Just as you are studying the playing style of your opponent, they are probably studying you. This means you cannot serve the ball the exact same way each time, you cannot return the ball the exact same way each time and you cannot play the same way for all of your games. Someone will be using the same strategy as you and they will tear you up on the court if you do this. Instead, you need to ensure that you are shaking things up at times. Pull out a new serve technique, try to hit the ball shallow when you usually go deep or even just move around the court a bit. This will allow you to really throw your opponent off so that they cannot read you quite as easily as you are trying to read them. Remember, it is a sport and winning is a great feeling.

Tips for choosing a small pet | Our Visual Legacy

A small pet looks cute and many people prefer to buy one without knowing their lifestyle fits the needs of their desired pet. There is a wide range of small pets, for example dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and even some exotic pets. Some may prefer a small dog or cat to play with; others will likely prefer which need a cave, for example hamsters, guinea pigs or birds need a cave into your house. It is obvious you choose a small pet you like but there are more issues you need to ensure before you want to get a small pet.

Here are some tips which may help to choose a suitable small pet for you:

1. A small dog

There is plenty of choice in different breeds but it is important to know the different characteristics. Selecting the right one is not always easy. Small dogs look so cute although they may not stay that way. Do some research to see which one would suit you best and here looking at the different breeds is essential since there are health considerations and suitability to your household to take into account.

There are several reasons why people choose a small dog. A number of small dog breeds make the perfect companion for people who live in an apartment. People who have children are more likely to choose a small dog because of the safety although this is not always the case with snappy dogs that can bite small children. We often read where large dogs have attacked children even though they know each other well. Small ones can as well, although there are some breeds that are more child friendly than others.

You can train a large dog, although children challenge them, and that can lead to unpredictable behavior of the dog. We often read that children are killed by large dogs. A small dog protects you against these kinds of problems. They can bite but children are certainly safer with a small dog, especially one that is well trained.

When you consider buying a small dog you need to be sure that your lifestyle suits the needs of your small dog. It is necessary that you spend a lot of time with them. Every dog needs exercise and a daily walk with your small dog is something you cannot forget to do. Never buy a small dog instead of a large dog because you want to spend less time with your new friend! Small dogs often desire more playtime and it is important paying attention to the vet visits and if they get the necessary vaccinations.

All small dogs have their own characteristics and even in the same breed there are differences. Something important in making your choice is to choose one which hair falls out or not. It can be annoying if your dog?s hair falls because you always have hair on your clothes during certain periods, for example a poodle. A poodle is a popular breed of small dogs whose hair falls out and regular grooming is a necessity. If you don?t feel comfortable doing it yourself you can visit a doggy saloon with specialized people although these can be very expensive. Be aware you can better spend a bit more money grooming his hair because it is very important for your dog?s health and you will save money because your dog will be in a better health.

Some popular breeds of small dogs are:

*Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas are small dogs which are well known for being fiercely loyal but often have an attitude of larger dogs; they are not the perfect choice when you have children because they bite easily. They don?t need much exercise and it doesn?t matter if you live in small home or a large one. Training is necessary from an early age and they can be socialized with other animals if they live together from a young age.

*The Maltese

The Maltese is maybe one of the cutest small dogs in the world. They like playing and are lively. An important characteristic is that they are trusting to their master and are mostly gentle, loving and certainly intelligent. They are ideal for living in an apartment and are very active inside.

*Yorkshire terriers

Yorkshire Terriers are probably the smallest breed you can find. These kind of puppies are very jealous but very loyal as companion. Mostly they choose their favorite master.

Small dogs are often very energetic and excellent for children and also older people. They live mostly longer than larger dogs; the average age is around 15 years dependent of the breed of dog. Both need exercise and these animals can improve the health of these people to obligate them to be active busy with them.

2. A small cat (kitten)

Many people like to buy a kitten because they are cute, funny and cuddly. However, they look the perfect pet for you; it is important to know they demand a lot of attention and these animals spend a lot of time outside and even climb in trees. An advantage of kittens that they don?t mind to stay alone; they can spend hours to play outside but they can also cause trouble in your house because it is possible they climb on the table and they can easy damage a vase or some valuable things which you have in your room.

Kittens have also different characteristics and you need to ensure you buy one which fits your lifestyle. It is important to know if you want a particular breed and it is wise to do some research before. A Siamese kitten might not a good choice for you if you want a quiet home because these kittens make much noise. A Persian cat requires a lot of work because they require daily grooming. If you can?t afford or you don?t like to this; you can best consider a short hair kitten. The Korat is maybe also a suitable kitten for you. These kittens are considered as ?good luck? cats and originated from Thailand. They are energetic and are the perfect companions if you want some affection.

If you prefer to buy a kitten as your pet; it is important to inform about their food habits and you need to be aware that they need a scratching post for their nails. Kittens are socialized animals and are often need and clean but some training is required to teach them some habits which can?t be tolerated in house.

3. Hamsters, guinea pigs, cavias or other rodents

Hamsters, guinea pigs, cavias or other rodents are cute and often good pets for children. Most of them only live between 2 and three years and you need a cave to keep them in your house. You need to be aware some can give you a nasty bite if you want to cuddle these pets. It is useful to buy a book with all the necessary information of their habits and what to do if they bite you before you consider buying one.

Guinea pigs can be a better choice because they live longer (usually 8 years) but they are also larger. It is preferable to buy two of them because they prefer a companion of their own kind. If you want to avoid breeding, you can best buy two of the same sex.

4. Birds

Small birds are nice pets but you need to be aware some species need a special diary. Some of them live between 30 and 50 years and even longer; for example a small Macaw (a parrot). It is possible some requirements made them unsuitable for keeping them as pet. You need also to be aware that some birds require much attention and it is not a good idea to keep such birds if you are only a few hours each day at home.

Canaries are often the easiest ones to keep as pet. They don?t require much attention and you can even keep them in a small apartment. You will find species in different colors but probably the yellow ones are the most popular ones. These birds love to sing even if they are alone at home.

Choosing a small pet is a difficult task because you need to be aware of their characteristics and if these fit your lifestyle. Some may look cute but they can surprise you with an unwanted behavior if you are not aware of their habits. Some may prefer a puppy, a kitten, a rodent or even a bird or fish; it is wise to consider about all the consequences and how your life will change.

Buying a small pet is a long term decision but may benefit the quality of your life and even relieve the stress after a day working. If you do the necessary research you will find a new companion which gives the warmth and love you need.

Five News Sites and Apps Named World's Best Designed ? The ...

worlds-best

October 1st, 2011

Five Web sites and mobile apps were named World?s Best Designed? in the inaugural year of the Society for News Design?s annual Best of Digital News Design competition.

  • CNN: World?s Best-Designed News Web Site (CNN.com) and World?s Best Designed News App (CNN for iPad)
  • The Globe and Mail: World?s Best-Designed News Web site
  • The Guardian for iPhone: World?s Best-Design Mobile App
  • NPR for iPad: World?s Best-Designed News App

Winners were announced Saturday night at the Society?s 2011 Workshop and Exhibition in St. Louis, MO. Portugal?s i newspaper was also recognized as The World?s Best-Designed Newspaper, as announced in February.

The Best of Digital Design competition began this spring when 20 industry leaders spent a month poring over more than 500 entries from around the world. They met in person at Ball State University in February to discuss the top 150 entries. In addition to the World?s Best Designed winners, sixty awards were given to individual projects.

Judges? Comments

CNN.com
World?s Best Designed News Website

CNN.com?s redesign helped defined online journalism last year, experimenting with new and creative approaches to storytelling. The site makes excellent use of space ? both above the scroll and below ? with clear, effective columns using good hierarchy. It does a beautiful job of combining both important news and political coverage with our desire for the geeky and the playful and, of course, gossip. The site is one of the few with an outstanding mix of video, text and photos used in a way that doesn?t feel out of touch. On CNN.com, stories are stories no matter how they are told or who tells them. And the site often links to user-generated content or other networks entirely under their top headlines.

CNN for iPad
World?s Best Designed News App

The CNN iPad app takes a cue from CNN.com, where a simple, grid-based structure drives its architecture and provides the user a simple, yet in-depth experience. But the iPad app takes it one step further. All too many news apps have made their tablet apps into miniature versions of their websites, but CNN didn?t rework a website as much as they considered the tablet as a new form. Gone are multiple menus and widgets. These might work well on a web page, but simplicity drives home a more pared down grid and story selection. And under the hood, the developers worked hard at creating a rich experience for the typical Web 2.0 user with a broad use of multimedia, an easy capacity to share stories and multiple ways of viewing content.

The Globe and Mail
World?s Best Designed News Website

This site?s design extends from the sophisticated, color-coded navigation users interact with to the strong, simple information architecture that underlies the entire site. The visual brand is always evident, even though each content sections? front page manages to feel unique. The home page and section fronts are deliberate but not rigid, adapting well to the news of the day. The overall presentation feels modern, and it emphasizes the use of excellent typographic hierarchy. The Globe and Mail makes good use of data and multimedia and scales well across platforms. The Globe and Mail site is subtle and elegant in all the right ways, yet it really tries to help the user find content. The attention to detail is so good that even the site map is useful.

The Guardian for iPhone
World?s Best Design Mobile App

Making a news app feel different from other news apps is an almost impossible feat, but the Guardian?s iPhone app rose to the challenge and has created an app that utilizes its space effectively yet beautifully. Its stylized, color-coded sections are simple, but effective. The navigation makes perfect sense in this mobile form where space is at a premium. The Guardian iPhone app also showcases multimedia and galleries, giving these mediums space and relevancy in a way that other phone-based apps don?t even bother to approach.

NPR for iPad
World?s Best Designed News App

This iPad app does more than just share National Public Radio?s news content, it transforms the experience of listening to news. Now users can program their own newscast, picking from NPR programs, and not restricted to a single day. This is much more than time-shifting ?? it?s medium bending. Not only is the primary concept behind the app powerful, but the experience is very polished. NPR (and BottleRocket) worked with Apple?s user interface guidelines creating an app that is fairly intuitive and has advanced features. There are few visual ornamentations or typographical flourishes, but the app is still attractive and fun to use. It transforms NPR listeners? expectations and sets a standard for news apps on this new platform.
