The modern UK household is home to a wonderful collection of internet-connected devices, including computers, smart phones and televisions.
Such devices provide instant access to information and there is only one considerable downside: the high quality of domestic technology is making many enterprise IT set-ups look distinctly second-class.
Less than a decade ago, employees would relish the opportunity to leave the dial-up modem at home and use a broad range of high-speed online services in the office. But while that might have been the dominant trend 10 years ago, the pace of technological development has been rapid.
The widespread consumerisation of IT during the last few years means most workers now have access to smarter technology in their pocket than on their office desk. While IT departments have seen spending constrained during tough economic conditions, UK consumers have benefited from the broad availability of mobile computing.
Cloud computing is increasingly an important impetus for change, too. Mobile consumers are beginning to use on demand IT to have instant access to information, regardless of location.
This confluence of consumerisation and on demand technology is causing a significant headache for IT leaders. Should CIOs build a strategy that enables authorised employees to connect their own devices to the enterprise network?
Of course there are security challenges from workers using their own devices to access business applications and these would have to be addressed. But consumerisation is not going away any time soon and a smart business will actually use the cloud to help the business take advantage of mobilisation.
For a start, on demand is not inherently insecure. The right type of cloud platform will allow organisations to make corporate data security a priority and ensure that only recognised devices are capable of accessing the network.
New cloud services, such as Microsoft?s Office 365, allow users to access corporate applications over a secure internet connection as and when required. Integrated approaches like Citrix?s virtual desktop infrastructure or online portals such as Microsoft SharePoint, deliver applications via a secure and controlled environment.
On demand, therefore, helps the business to deal with the ever-rising tide of mobile computing. Once secure rules are in place, users can plug-and-play whilst not compromising the security of the enterprise network. And they won?t feel that the office is technologically a step behind the home, either.
